The Potholes

A wave of public anger has erupted across Navi Mumbai as relentless monsoon rains have turned major highways into dangerous, pothole-riddled stretches. Key routes connecting Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and the JNPA port are seeing severe traffic bottlenecks and frequent accidents.

The situation is particularly critical along the Ulwe-Belapur road, the primary arterial route for the Navi Mumbai International Airport. Deep craters and heavy waterlogging have made travel hazardous for both domestic and international commuters. The safety risks were highlighted recently when a heavy container truck overturned on the Ulwe-Belapur stretch, causing massive gridlock on both sides of the corridor.

Other vital thoroughfares, including the Sion-Panvel Highway and the Thane-Belapur road, are equally affected. Key flyovers at Kharghar and Turbhe, along with the main entry stretch from Airoli Toll Plaza, have developed large, hidden craters beneath accumulated rainwater. Daily commuters and two-wheeler riders face constant hazards as vehicles lose balance during sudden braking.

Frustrated residents have raised sharp questions over civic accountability, noting that temporary patch-ups wash away annually despite substantial maintenance budgets. Addressing the mounting criticism, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials stated that repair work is currently underway on a war footing, promising long-term, modern road infrastructure upgrades to match the international airport’s requirements.

Party leaders demand immediate cancellation of the private tender, warning that commercial operation will make civic sports facilities unaffordable for locals.

The Protest

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has strongly objected to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) proposal to outsource the operation and maintenance of the newly constructed public swimming pool in Ghansoli to a private contractor.

Party representatives have submitted a formal memorandum to the civic administration, urging NMMC to revoke the privatization tender immediately and manage the facility directly. MNS leaders asserted that the swimming pool was constructed using taxpayers’ money to provide affordable sports infrastructure to local residents, youth, and aspiring athletes.

“Handing over public civic assets to private operators inevitably leads to steep entry and membership fee hikes, placing these facilities out of reach for middle- and lower-income families,” an MNS spokesperson stated. The party emphasized that public infrastructure should prioritize community welfare over commercial profit generation.

Warning the civic body against proceeding with the private tender, MNS leaders declared that if NMMC fails to withdraw the plan and maintain the pool as a fully civic-run facility, the party will launch an aggressive political agitation and protest across Navi Mumbai to safeguard public interest.

Vishal Dolas alleges CIDCO and NMMC are altering master plan reservations to benefit private developers at the expense of local employment and infrastructure.

The Demand

Former corporator Vishal Dolas has raised serious concerns over the alleged misuse and unauthorized modification of public utility plots across CBD Belapur. Addressing a press conference, Dolas accused the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) of compromising the city’s master plan.

The controversy centers on plot modifications in CBD Belapur, specifically Plot Nos. 15 and 16 in Sector 15, as well as Plot Nos. 5 and 5A in Sector 46A. Dolas highlighted that land originally reserved for public amenities such as hospitals, schools, and five-star hotels is being systematically converted into residential and commercial properties by misusing Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR) to favor private builders.

Clarifying that his stance is not against urban development, Dolas emphasized that converting commercial and hospitality reservations into housing developments directly deprives local youth of crucial employment opportunities and harms long-term civic planning.

Dolas urged authorities to declare a clear, transparent policy regarding changes in land use and demanded an independent inquiry into recent plot transfers. He warned that if CIDCO and NMMC fail to address these concerns, he will escalate the matter to the Urban Development Department, the Lokayukta, and the judiciary, alongside mobilizing local residents for a larger public protest movement.
