NMMC Seeks Additional Water Resources to Secure Navi Mumbai’s Growing Needs.

The Water Demand

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has begun making plans to guarantee a sufficient water supply in the future due to the city of Navi Mumbai’s rapid expansion and growing population. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has proposed more water resources from the Patalganga River and post-power generation discharge from Tata’s Bhira Hydropower Plant to the Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation (KIDC), Thane, in order to fulfill this increasing demand.

At the moment, the Morbe Dam project supplies the city with 450 million liters of water per day (MLD). However, the city’s water demand is anticipated to increase significantly due to ongoing large infrastructure projects like the Mass Housing Scheme by CIDCO, the Trans-Harbour Linking Road, and the new international airport. The population of the city is also expected to rise dramatically as a result of the addition of 14 villages from Thane district to NMMC’s jurisdiction and the implementation of new UDCPR norms that permit Variable Floor Space Index (FSI).

According to projections, the NMMC area would need 1,175 MLD of water per day by 2055 to accommodate the needs of a population that is predicted to grow to 4.42 million. NMMC has already engaged a consultant to find new water sources in order to address this issue. It has been suggested by an expert team headed by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Shinde to source water from the Patalganga River and the discharge water from Bhira’s power generation. There has been a preliminary report on feasibility submitted.

On September 11, 2024, this proposal was given administrative permission. NMMC has since called for bids to select qualified technical consultants to handle the feasibility studies, environmental issues, and technical difficulties associated with the new water source project.

In order to fulfill future demands, NMMC will need 700 MLD of water per day in addition to the 65 MLD that is currently supplied by MIDC and Morbe Dam. Arvind Shinde, Additional City Engineer, is pursuing the plan; KIDC has to grant its in-principle permission before the corporation can move further with the next phase.

The NMMC is proceeding with preparations to safeguard the city’s water supply for decades to come, under the direction of Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde. This will guarantee that the expanding Navi Mumbai population will have access to necessary resources.
