Just after finding Metas parent firm to be extremist Russia has banned Facebook and Instagram

A Russian court has declared Facebook and Instagram illegal in the country, and its parent company, Meta, has been labelled as “extreme.” After loosening its hate speech laws to allow calls for violence against Russians on Facebook and Instagram, Russia sought the court to declare Meta an extremist organisation.

After the business decided to allow hate speech against the Russian military and Russian President Vladimir Putin, access to Facebook and Instagram was already banned in Russia. Meta later stated that they do not accept calls for the death of heads of state and that the only exception to their guidelines is statements against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The modified hate speech regulations will only apply to those in Ukraine, according to Meta’s President, Global Affairs, Nick Clegg. He claimed that this would not be used against ordinary Russians and that they would not support any anti-Russian sentiment.

Meta’s arguments, however, were rejected by the Moscow court. The court found that Russians’ favourite social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, were engaging in extremist behaviour. The court, however, decided not to prohibit Meta’s Whatsapp service because it is a communication tool rather than a source of information.

“Meta’s efforts are targeted towards Russia and its armed forces. “We want that Meta is prohibited and that this decision is implemented immediately,” Igor Kovalevsky, a spokesman for Russia’s FSB security service, is said to have told the court.

“The usage of Meta’s products by individuals and legal entities should not be construed as participation in extremist activity,” Kovalevsky stated in court. Meta’s services will not be held accountable to individuals.”

During the continuing conflict with Ukraine, Facebook and Instagram may not be the last western social media companies to be banned from Russia. Last Monday, the Russian Communications Ministry accused Google and its subsidiary YouTube of terrorist activity and demanded that they stop posting anti-Russian films.
