India votes no on Russias latest UN Security Council resolution

Published

on

India joined a group of 12 countries that refused to vote on a UN Security Council resolution on humanitarian issues offered by Russia on Wednesday (UNSC). The resolution called for the protection of civilians “in a vulnerable situation in Ukraine,” as well as safe passage and humanitarian help for those willing to flee the conflict-torn country. The draught proposal, which was co-sponsored by Syria, North Korea, and Belarus, was panned as it omitted to address the main cause of Ukraine’s dire dilemma, namely Moscow’s invasion.

On Thursday, China, together with permanent member and veto-wielding Russia, voted in favour of the draught resolution. According to sources, no countries voted against the proposal, which called for a “negotiated ceasefire to enable safe, fast, voluntary, and unhindered evacuation of civilians, and emphasises the necessity for the parties involved to agree on humanitarian pauses to this goal.” A total of 13 countries, including the United States, did not vote on the measure in protest of Russia’s aggression against its former Soviet neighbour.

The UN Security Council votes down a Russian resolution on Ukraine.

Russia was heavily rejected in passing the decree that highlighted the dire socio-economic situation in Ukraine on Wednesday as a result of the majority of voting members abstaining from the voting procedure. The resolution was expected to be voted on by at least 15 members. For the decree to be accepted, Russia needed at least nine votes in favour and no veto from one of the four permanent members—the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and France.

The setback occurred on the same day as the United Nations General Assembly began debating a resolution proposed by Ukraine, which was co-sponsored by 100 other countries and backed by a dozen more and held the Russian Federation responsible for the growing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

‘Dialogue and diplomacy’ is what India stands for.

India did not issue a comment following the conclusion of the voting process. India had previously refrained from voting in the UNSC and the UNGA on resolutions condemning Russia’s aggression on Ukraine. In response to such incidents, US Vice President Joe Biden chastised New Delhi for taking a “weak” position on the issue. Nevertheless, India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict has remained neutral since its inception, despite New Delhi’s unwavering support for a rapid resolution of the crisis through dialogue and diplomacy, creating further concerns about the humanitarian situation in war-torn Ukraine. In contrast to Biden’s comments, US Trade Representative Ned Price said on Tuesday that the US recognises India’s long history with Russia and prefers to be a “partner of choice” with New Delhi.
