India has blocked Channels on Youtube for spreading false information

Published

on

According to a statement released by the ministry of information and broadcasting on Monday, India has blacklisted 16 additional YouTube news stations, including six headquartered in Pakistan, for propagating fake news on national security, international relations, communal peace in the country, and public order.

On Friday, two orders were issued to ban the 16 channels, which have a combined audience of 680 million, according to the statement. Under the IT guidelines that went into effect in February 2021, the government has blocked YouTube channels for propagating disinformation for the fourth time.

78 YouTube channels have been disabled since December, the majority of them are tied to Pakistan.

According to the ministry, none of the digital news publishers had provided information as required by rule 18 of the IT Rules, which requires publishers of news and current affairs content, as well as online curated content, in India to inform the ministry about their operations and file monthly compliance reports on grievances received.

Some YouTube channels in India uploaded a video that referred to a group of people as terrorists and incited hate among members of different religious groups.

The ministry stated in a statement that “such information was considered to have the potential to cause communal strife and disrupt public order.”

It went on to say that several YouTube channels headquartered in India were found to be publishing unsubstantiated news and videos that might cause fear among various segments of the population. “False assertions of a pan-India shutdown due to Covid-19, intimidating migrant labor, and bogus allegations about dangers to particular religious communities, among other things, are examples.” Such information was found to be harmful to the country’s public order,” the statement said.

The Pakistan-based channels were discovered to have been used in a “planned way to disseminate fake news about India on different issues such as the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir, and India’s international relations in light of the situation in Ukraine, among other things,” according to the ministry. “The content of these channels was found to be wholly untrue and sensitive in terms of India’s national security, sovereignty and integrity, and good ties with other countries,” the statement stated.

The measure comes after the ministry warned private TV news networks not to make misleading allegations or use sensational headlines a few days ago. The statement said, “The Government of India remains dedicated to ensuring a safe and secure information environment in India across print, broadcast, and internet media.”
