In the midst of the crisis Sri Lanka has been assured of Chinas support

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa disclosed on Friday that he had a “very productive” chat with his Chinese colleague Li Keqiang, in a breakthrough. He said in a tweet that China is prepared to provide urgently needed assistance as the island country suffers an economic crisis, which has been described as the worst since its 1948 independence from Britain.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa took to Twitter to express his gratitude for the assurance of help for his government in addressing some of the most pressing requirements affecting people’s livelihoods and well-being. “Had a fruitful conversation with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang,” he added. I expressed #SriLanka’s thanks to #China for their long-standing relationship and for pledging support to address some of the most pressing requirements hurting people’s livelihoods and well-being in these trying times.”

Li told Rajapaksa, according to Xinhua, that China understands the island country’s troubles and concerns. China is “ready to provide much-needed livelihood aid for Sri Lanka within its capacity,” according to Xinhua, citing Li.

Sri Lanka’s financial crisis

Huge protests against the Rajapaksa regime have erupted across the country as a result of the crisis. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sri Lanka’s economy has been under strain. Tourism has plummeted in the country, followed by a collapse in the agriculture sector as a result of the government’s decision to ban all chemical fertilizers to make the country’s agricultural output 100% organic. The Sri Lankan Finance Ministry also stated on April 12 that the government would default on its $51 billion external debt, pending a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, has threatened to launch a no-confidence vote against President Rajapaksa’s government if he fails to take meaningful steps to help the country emerge from its political and economic crisis.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa nominated 24 State Ministers to a new Cabinet on April 18 as the administration faces political and economic upheaval. At the President’s House, the new Cabinet Ministers were sworn in before the President. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa invited independent ministers of Parliament (MPs) to a meeting last week to examine the economic crisis.
