The Glass of Municipal vehicle was smashed by Former Corporator Nanda Kate during a protest against Encroachment inaction.

The Protest

Former Shiv Sena Shinde group corporator Nanda Kate broke the glass of a Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) encroachment department vehicle. On Wednesday, July 10th, the event took place on the Airoli G Ward division office’s grounds. According to reports, Kate’s actions were motivated by her dissatisfaction with the NMMC’s handling of illegal parking, hawkers, and fruit and vegetable sellers who were invading sidewalks, roadways, and the areas between stores in Sector 3.  Security personnel at the G Ward office said Kate broke the car’s window with a bat. She vented her frustration at the NMMC for failing to stop these illegal acts in spite of several complaints.

Dashrath Suravase was given the contract by the encroachment department to oversee the hawker eradication process. But since the encroachment department personnel and contractors aren’t enforcing the law, things have gotten worse in Airoli Sector 3, where there are more hawkers. Unauthorized hawker stalls have seriously inconvenienced locals, especially ladies, especially on Fridays.

“I have repeatedly submitted written complaints to the G Ward officer regarding this issue,” stated Kate. “Yet nothing has been done in response to this. Additionally, I’ve asked Rahul Gethe, the deputy encroachment commissioner for Belapur, to move quickly to stop encroachments in Airoli.”

When Kate went to the department office the day of the incident, she discovered that the driver of the intruding vehicle had not shown up for work, not even beyond twelve. Despite the driver’s absence, she accused the contractor of continuing to receive payments from the municipality for the driver’s wage, vehicle allowance, and other expenditures. “In my frustration with the lack of action, I broke the window of the encroachment vehicle,” she said. “Officials of the concerned department must take action against unauthorized hawkers as soon as possible.”
