IMD predicted Cyclone Asani would form over the Bay of Bengal

Published

on

Last week, the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) issued a warning that a low-pressure region was building over the southwest Indian Ocean, and that it was likely to grow into a cyclone by early next week. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning this week that the cyclone is expected to make landfall in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on March 21, most likely.

The south Indian islands of Andaman and Nicobar have been placed on high alert. Although the storm is unlikely to make landfall on the Indian coast, heavy rain and severe gusts are forecast for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This is India’s first cyclone of the year. Over the Bay of Bengal, a cyclone is expected to form.

Last week, the Indian Meteorological Organization (IMD) anticipated that the storm will hit Bangladesh and Myanmar’s north-western region. The cyclone’s recent trajectory, however, indicates that east and northeast India would be vulnerable to its effects for the rest of the week.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the low-pressure area (LPA) that emerged on Tuesday was forecast to proceed east-north-eastwards and become a well-marked LPA by Saturday before strengthening into a depression and moving along and off the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In the south Andaman Sea, light to moderate rainfall/thundershowers are expected on March 19. In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in a few places, with extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

On March 21, the weather system was forecast to strengthen into a cyclonic storm and move north-north-westwards till March 22.

Until March 18, strong winds of 40-50 kmph with gusts to 60 kmph are expected over the Bay of Bengal and the equatorial Indian Ocean. By the 21st of March, the wind speed is forecast to progressively increase.

Over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as the Bay of Bengal, gale winds of 70-80 kmph with gusts to 90 kmph are extremely likely. Gale winds of 70-80 kmph with gusts to 90 kmph are expected over the Bay of Bengal and the Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts on March 23. Sri Lanka has given the cyclone the name Asani.

On Thursday and Friday, the seas in the southeast Bay of Bengal and the neighbouring south Andaman Sea are very likely to become rough.

“For the time being, it does not appear to be affecting the Indian shore.” Asani may cross Bangladesh or the north Myanmar shores, according to our simulations. However, it is also too early to predict the course of events. “All conditions are favorable for the cyclone to form and intensify,” an IMD official said.

“It will then proceed north-northeastwards, approaching Bangladesh and the north Myanmar coast by the morning of March 23,” the meteorological service warned.

The government has issued warnings.

Fishermen should avoid the center areas of the south Bay of Bengal and the adjacent Equatorial Indian Ocean on Wednesday, as well as the southeast Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea area on Thursday and Friday, according to the meteorological office.
