Navi Mumbai police suspends five police personnel in an extortion case.

The Case

Five members of the Navi Mumbai Police Force are accused of extorting Rs. 3,000 from a delivery driver of gas cylinders, for which they have been suspended. The police officials involved are currently being investigated for allegedly forcing Vikram Khot, the tempo driver, into paying Rs. 3,000.

On October 5, when the five policemen were on duty in a police escort van, the event occurred. When they stopped Khot’s tempo at Uran Phata on his way to Airoli for a VIP pickup, they said his driving was inappropriate. In addition to confiscating his driver’s license, they threatened to punish Khot a whopping Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 25,000 for alleged infractions pertaining to vehicle documents.

Khot revealed that he had just Rs. 100 out of fear of harsh punishment. He was joined by his assistant Nitin. However, he was forced to pay up by the officers. Khot ultimately sent Rs. 1,500 using a rickshaw driver’s cell phone after haggling.

After the event, Khot informed his gas agency manager, who suggested that he lodge a formal complaint at the Nerul police station. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Kumar Patil said that a case of extortion has been filed against the three main officers in light of the allegations. “The two other police officers in the escort vehicle have also been suspended pending additional investigation, even though they were not directly involved in the extortion.”

The Fraud

The police have launched a manhunt to arrest a husband-and-wife cheating duo popularly dubbed a ‘Bunty-Babli’ couple for allegedly duping three local businessmen of Rs 1.45 crore under the guise of lucrative business deals and high-return investment schemes.

According to police sources, the accused couple lured the three victims into investing substantial amounts of money by promising guaranteed profits and exclusive business partnerships. Crackdown Targets Mule Account Holders and Facilitators Channeling Illicit Funds for Cyber Fraud Syndicates.

The Crack Down

In a significant move against organized digital fraud, the Navi Mumbai Police have launched an extensive crackdown on key enablers and facilitators powering cybercrime networks across the region.

The law enforcement initiative focuses on individuals who rent, sell, or operate “mule” bank accounts and fraudulent SIM cards. These intermediaries serve as crucial links for cyber syndicates, allowing fraudsters to process, layer, and divert millions of rupees stolen through various online scams—including investment fraud, illegal gaming apps, and phishing schemes.

Investigators revealed that these accounts are often opened using falsified documents or by offering small financial incentives to vulnerable individuals. Once created, the account credentials, passbooks, ATM cards, and linked SIM cards are handed over to criminal rings to rapidly transfer illicit funds before law enforcement can trace or freeze them.

Police officials warned that individuals permitting their bank accounts or identity documents to be used for illegal transactions will face severe criminal prosecution as co-conspirators under cybercrime laws. Authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant, avoid sharing personal banking credentials, and immediately report suspicious financial activity or cyber fraud through the national helpline 1930.
