NMMC Turns 71.99 Tonnes of Ganeshotsav Nirmalya into Compost
Floral waste collected during Ganeshotsav will be converted into compost for use in Navi Mumbai’s gardens.
The Nirmalya
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has given a green touch to this year’s Ganeshotsav by collecting 71.99 tonnes of nirmalya, including flowers, garlands, durva, tulsi, shami leaves and other organic offerings.
The collected nirmalya was kept separate from other waste and transported to the civic body’s facility in Turbhe, where it will be scientifically processed into compost. The compost will later be used in NMMC-maintained gardens across the city. To encourage proper waste segregation, NMMC had placed dedicated nirmalya collection bins at 22 natural and 156 artificial immersion sites. Residents were encouraged to hand over floral waste separately instead of mixing it with regular garbage.
The highest quantity of nirmalya, 25.99 tonnes, was collected on the seventh day of Ganesh idol immersion, which also coincided with Gauri immersion. A further 14.51 tonnes was collected during the one-and-a-half-day immersion period, while 10.95 tonnes was gathered on Anant Chaturdashi. The civic body appreciated citizens for supporting environmentally friendly celebrations. NMMC said practices such as proper waste segregation, the use of eco-friendly idols and artificial immersion ponds can help reduce the environmental impact of the festival.
The initiative highlights how religious offerings that would otherwise become waste can be turned into a useful resource for the city.
