Fishing Halt at Karanja Port Hits ₹30-Crore Export Business

Published

on

Fishing operations at Karanja Fishing Port in Uran have come to a standstill for nearly 10 days due to rough weather, causing heavy losses to the seafood export industry. The disruption has impacted business worth an estimated Rs 25–30 crore.

The port, which normally handles fish exports worth at least Rs 2.5 crore daily, has been shut for the past six days, with poor sea conditions expected to prevent fishing for another four days. The shortage is also likely to push retail fish prices higher across Navi Mumbai and Mumbai.

Since its inauguration in August 2024, Karanja Port has rapidly emerged as one of India’s largest seafood export hubs. In just one year, it has exported fish worth over Rs 500 crore to international markets including Europe, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Middle East. Key export varieties include ribbon fish, cuttlefish, pomfret, koba fish and bangda (mackerel).

The port has also become an important driver of the local economy. More than 400 fishing boats operate out of Karanja, while nearly 2,000 families are supported through associated businesses such as workshops, ice plants, marine hardware suppliers and other small industries.

Exporters and fishing community representatives fear that prolonged disruptions could dent the port’s growing global reputation and further strain the livelihoods of local fishermen. Authorities are monitoring the situation, but resumption of fishing will depend on the stabilization of sea conditions.

Nashik’s Kumbh Mela to Feature High-Tech 4,000-Camera Security Network

Published

on

An advanced Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) will monitor the 2027 religious mega-event using artificial intelligence to ensure pilgrim safety.

The Cameras

As millions prepare to gather for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027, authorities in Nashik are rolling out an unprecedented security initiative to keep the sprawling crowds safe. At the core of this effort is a massive deployment of over 4,000 AI-enabled CCTV cameras, all feeding live data into a single, centralized command centre.

The sheer scale of the Kumbh Mela, expected to attract upwards of 12 crore devotees, necessitates moving beyond traditional policing. The Nashik Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL) is executing this high-tech surveillance network, carefully placing cameras across Nashik City, Trimbakeshwar, and vital rural parking hubs. Crucially, the system incorporates artificial intelligence designed to detect overcrowded zones in real-time, predict traffic flow, and spot potential safety hazards before they escalate.

This means that during peak days such as the massive Amrit Snan gatherings authorities stationed at the single command hub can instantly redirect crowds, deploy emergency medical teams, or ease traffic congestion based on live data. The camera network is further supported by 18 surveillance drones and an integrated public address system to communicate directly with pilgrims.

By treating the Kumbh Mela not just as a religious gathering but as a massive logistical undertaking, the new unified monitoring centre promises a safer, more organized experience, prioritizing the well-being of every devotee attending the sacred event.

CM Fadnavis Launches Statewide Crusade to Protect Students from Drug Menace

Published

The “Campus Connect” initiative moves beyond policing, focusing on counseling, curriculum changes, and community support to build a drug-free future for Maharashtra’s youth.

The Initiative

Every morning, millions of parents in Maharashtra send their children off to school, hoping for their safety, growth, and success. Yet, the rising shadow of youth substance abuse has increasingly turned campuses into battlegrounds. Recognizing this silent crisis, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has unveiled the “Campus Connect” initiative a compassionate, community-driven mission to make every educational institution across the state entirely drug-free.

Rather than relying solely on police enforcement and punitive measures, the state is now treating addiction as a societal issue that requires empathy, awareness, and education. At the heart of the campaign are over 4,000 newly established guidance and counseling committees. Comprising teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals, these support groups aim to identify and gently guide vulnerable students before they fall deep into the trap of addiction.

To solidify this commitment, Fadnavis has personally written to school and college principals statewide, urging administrators to take active ownership of their students’ well-being. Across Maharashtra, students and educators are already taking collective pledges to look out for one another and report drug-related activities. Furthermore, the government is integrating mandatory de-addiction lessons into the school curriculum, ensuring children understand the dangers early on. For those already struggling, the initiative offers a lifeline. Partnering with local bodies like the Navi Mumbai Police, the state is expanding rehabilitation centers to provide specialized psychiatric counseling and medical care.

Ultimately, the “Campus Connect” drive is more than just a government mandate; it is a promise to families that Maharashtra’s schools will remain safe havens for learning, not spaces of despair.
