In Nagaland, dog meat is a delicacy and is considered to have high medicinal and high nutritional value. This consideration of dog meat as part of a food system, culture, or delicacy truly does not cross the minds of many Indians.
Looking into the matter and condemning this barbaric treatment of dogs, Drishti Bharat too has made a fresh appeal to the Government of Nagaland to ban the bootlegging of dogs and their consumption as food in the state. Drishti Bharat has also pleaded the Government to take necessary actions to the earliest to secure the enforcement and implementation of strict animal welfare laws.
According to a source, dog-eating was originally a Chinese tradition but it is now found on the menu not only in China but also in North Korea, South Korea, and Vietnam. It is said that around 15 million dogs are eaten in Asia on a yearly basis. Not just that, China celebrates a ten-day-long festival every year known as the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in which thousands and thousands of dogs are reportedly consumed. This festival has drawn criticism globally claiming that the dogs are treated cruelly. Animal activists claim that these innocent dogs are intentionally tortured and boiled alive to enhance the taste of their meat. So excruciating and gruesome! Despite all the public condemnations China celebrated this savage festival this year on June 21st amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the light of this painful state of animals, Drishti Bharat pleads mankind to give wide publicity to the care of animals and urge the authorities to stop the capture of dogs for the purpose of slaughter and meat. Drishti Bharat advocates the virtues of kindness and justice to animals and the prevention of cruelty against them aiming to cultivate a spirit of compassion among the public to these innocent souls.
