Despite Recent Cleanup Efforts, Juhugaon Lake Continues To Suffer From Pollution

Published

on

Residents and local officials are puzzled as Juhugaon Lake, which was well cleaned just two months ago, is now again struggling with the return of algae and dirt.

In March 2023, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) set aside over Rs. 24 lakhs for Juhugaon Lake’s upkeep and cleaning. Locals, however, contend that despite recent attempts, the problem has not been resolved because the lake’s water quality has consistently declined following clean-up’s.

Juhugaon Village Council and Juhugaon Gramasthan Mandal President Himanshu Patil voiced his displeasure with the way the NMMC handled the matter. Patil said that the issue has been made worse by the build-up of dirt and algae, which has jammed the flap gate.

“The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation finished cleaning and repairing Juhugaon Lake in March 2023. The water turned bad and smelled a few months later, around the time of the Ganesh festival, and algae started to grow. The algae was removed by the NMMC in response, but the lake’s water continued to smell bad. Further cleaning operations were then carried out in December 2023. But after only one month, by January 2024, the water is dirty, foul-smelling, and overrun with algae once more, according to Patil.

Concerns are growing among the public since February 13th is the Maghi Ganesh Jayanti celebration. Patil highlighted that the celebration will face difficulties due to the lake’s current condition since believers will be reluctant to submerge the Shri Ganesh murthi in contaminated water.

In order to secure a better long-term solution to the problem and to fully clean the lake, Patil has urged for fast action. Residents now doubt the effectiveness of the NMMC’s earlier initiatives and want strict action from the government to protect Juhugaon Lake’s biological balance.
