Despite Court Orders, Consumers Are Still Being Sold Vegetables That Are Grown On Chemical Waste Water

Vegetables grown on chemical waste water are sold to customers in Navi Mumbai.

The Problem

Vegetables grown on sewage and chemical waste water along the railway tracks in Navi Mumbai are being sold to customers under the guise of fresh produce, posing major health risks, even though the Bombay High Court issued strict orders in 2019 forbidding this practice.

The railway administration in Navi Mumbai has permitted the planting of vegetables in several open spots along the tracks that are meant to prevent invasion. Regulating the water quality utilized in this procedure is not done, though. The region’s farmers are cultivating possibly harmful veggies by directly injecting chemical waste water from drains onto their agricultural fields.

Under the false pretense of “gavathi bhaji,” vegetables grown on sewage water close to Navi Mumbai’s Harbour Railway are making their way into the retail sector and misleading customers. Grown in dirty water, these veggies are sold along the railroad tracks tied with grass sticks, frequently with real farm products. They seem fresher, so even though they cost more, they draw in unwary customers.

The Bombay High Court restated its directives to the railway administration to stop growing vegetables beside the lines after a social group brought up their concerns and went before the court. Nonetheless, this practice continues, putting the public’s health at serious danger.

Concerned resident Mahesh Jadhav addressed the matter, stressing that in order to guarantee the safety of products, irrigation using water from wells or tankers is necessary.

The issue is under the purview of the national government, according to Assistant Commissioner GV Jagtap of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s Vashi Division. To sample or act on this matter, the central authorities would have to be involved.
