Cop in Navi Mumbai “spits” on a Dalit guy and makes him lick his shoes in the police station; he is then arrested

On Thursday, a 28-year-old Dalit man was assaulted inside the Kalamboli police station in Navi Mumbai by an assistant police inspector who is stationed there. Dinesh Patil, the officer, has also been charged with violating the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for allegedly using derogatory caste terminology toward the victim, Vikas Ujgare. At the police station, Patil allegedly spit in Ujgare’s face and made him kiss his shoes.

According to reports, Patil harboured resentment toward Ujgare, who had protested to top police authorities about the Kalamboli police station’s staff members’ hesitation to file his complaint after he had been the victim of a cyberscam.

In an interview with the media, Ujgare said, “On January 6, at 8 p.m., I was in a Chinese restaurant with my buddy, who got into a fight with the owner of the establishment. The owner attacked us, so I dialled the police control room. A crew from the Kalamboli Police station soon arrived.

Ujgare continued, saying that he had begged the police to take him to the hospital since he was wounded, but they had refused. “ The police transported me to a government hospital in Panvel after much pleading.

I should be taken to a separate hospital, the physicians told the cops. The cops, however, compelled me to sit on the floor inside the Kalamboli police station once they had taken me there. Patil then arrived and began hitting me,” the speaker said.

He further stated that the police had confirmed his identity as the complainant against them.

“Patil began pounding me on my face and neck because he was angry. Then he pulled me into a room, where I was severely beaten. The officer then inquired about my caste, and when I replied that I was a Dalit, he insulted me for being from a lesser caste and spit on me,” the 28-year-old said, adding that Patil had him kiss his shoes.

On January 7, he asserted that the Kalamboli police picked him up at 3 am, drove him to the MGM hospital in Kamothe, dumped him down there, and then drove away.

Ujgare spent three days in MGM hospital recovering from the injuries he received during the beating. The moment I was let go, I engaged a barrister and filed a case. On January 14, the assistant police commissioner and the zonal deputy commissioner both took notes of my remarks.

However, Ujgare petitioned the Navi Mumbai Police commissioner since the FIR registration process was taking too long. As a result, a case was eventually opened very late on Thursday. Dinesh Patil is on sick leave, according to Senior Inspector Sanjay Patil of the Kalamboli police station. He said, “We have filed a FIR against the police officer, and an assistant commissioner is looking into it.”
