Citizens Hold 7th Consecutive Protest to Save Lotus Lake in Nerul

Published

on

With growing concern over the ongoing environmental damage to Lotus Lake in Nerul, citizens and environmental activists gathered for the seventh consecutive Sunday on July 20, demanding immediate action against illegal debris dumping and unauthorized water chestnut plantation.

The protest, held at Sector 27 near Lotus Lake, aims to form a dedicated ‘Forum’ to protect the lake. Despite directives from the Maharashtra Forest Minister, CIDCO has failed to remove the seven truckloads of debris dumped into the lake on June 4. Protesters criticized CIDCO’s inaction, calling it a blatant disregard for environmental responsibility.

More than 15 housing societies from Nerul have submitted complaints through various official portals including the CMO and PMO, urging intervention. Activist Santosh Karkera revealed that his complaint to the PMO was forwarded to Abhay Pimparkar, Director of Environment, Maharashtra, who has written to the Thane Collector to take necessary steps.

“We will file a fresh complaint on the PMO portal highlighting CIDCO’s continued negligence,” Karkera said.

Sunil Agarwal, founder of Save Lotus Lake Group, added, “Despite being a government body, CIDCO has failed to protect this notified wetland even after public outcry and ministry directives. We remain united in our efforts.”

The group also plans to meet State Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, citing NMMC’s failure to file an FIR against CIDCO despite clear directions from the minister during a recent Janata Darbar.

The protests are expected to continue until concrete action is taken.

The Repairs

With Ganeshotsav just around the corner, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up efforts to make city roads safer and smoother for residents and devotees.

NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed officials to inspect damaged roads and take up urgent repairs, with priority being given to routes that will witness the movement of large Ganesh idols and immersion processions.
