Cigarettes From Dubai Hidden In A Gypsum Plaster Board Shipment Were Seized by Customs In Navi Mumbai

At the Jawaharlal Nehru Customs House (JNCH), Nhava Sheva, Navi Mumbai, the Special Intelligence and Investigation Branch (SIIB) (I) has effectively intercepted and seized about 57,02,400 sticks of foreign origin cigarettes worth Rs 11.40 crore that was imported from Dubai. Officials said on Wednesday that the shipment, which included a 40-foot container, was mistakenly identified as “Gypsum Plaster Board” and was headed for ICD Sanathnagar in Hyderabad.

Customs sources claim that after a thorough inspection of the 18 pallets within a 40-foot container, the officers found around 400 cartons hiding under the guise of Gypsum Plaster Board, which contained 57,02,2400 sticks of cigarettes of foreign origin.

“The strategy for hiding cigarettes in gypsum plasterboard is to place the contraband inside pallets of plasterboard that have been carefully designed to conceal it.

In this instance, the 40-foot container’s pallets made of gypsum plaster board concealed the smokes with an overseas provenance. Cigarette cartons were crammed into discrete cavities or compartments made inside plaster boards as part of a smuggling operation. The package was fraudulently identified as a shipment of plaster boards made of gypsum that was going to a valid place. An officer stated, “The concealment was so precise that the cigarettes could only be found through a thorough examination.”

“The smugglers tried to evade detection by disguising their illicit cargo among ordinary construction materials. They took advantage of the fact that the large volume and heavy weight of legitimate shipments of similar items usually result in less rigorous inspection,” the official explained.
