Austria disproves misinformation about Russian gas payments

Published

Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s appeal for European countries to pay in rubles, Austrian Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer said on Wednesday that Austria will continue to pay for Russian gas supplies in Euros. Shortly after Gazprom, Russia’s state-owned gas company declared a halt on gas deliveries to Poland and Bulgaria due to their failure to pay in Russian currency, Nehammer turned to Twitter to denounce news that Austria had changed its payment method for Russian gas.

“To the point and comma,” Nehammer clarified, “Austria is abiding by the unanimously decided European Union penalties.”

Alfred Stern, the CEO of OMV, an Austrian multinational integrated oil, gas, and petrochemical business, stated earlier in March that the firm will follow EU regulations and “of course” continue to pay in euros. “We have no other legal foundation for this deal. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to accomplish it “he had stated Nehammer repeated OMV CEO’s view earlier this year, adding that Austria has no alternative foundation for payment in any currency other than dollars or euros. In a remarkable change of events, multiple media outlets, including Sputnik, claimed on Wednesday that OMV has agreed to pay for Russian gas supplies in rubles, citing local Austrian media. According to the study, Nehammer Gas accepted Russian payment arrangements that “complied with the requirements of the sanctions.”

“Before the Russian propaganda’s bogus news spreads further here. Of sure, OMV will continue to pay in euros for Russian gas deliveries “According to Nehammer’s Twitter tweet.

Russia has been accused of using gas as a “blackmailing device.”

Russia cut off gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria on Wednesday after the nations refused to pay for purchases in Russian currency, as demanded by the Kremlin. In a statement, Russian state-owned gas tycoon Gazprom said that deliveries would restart only if the payments were paid. Poland verified shortly after the report that Gazprom had blocked shipments through the Yamal pipeline. Bulgaria has yet to provide an update on the supply situation.

However, Gazprom has cautioned both EU countries against the “unauthorized removal of Russian gas from transit volumes to third countries,” citing the fact that both countries serve as transit routes to Germany and other western European countries.

President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen also chastised Russia for cutting off gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria. “It’s a Russian effort to blackmail us,” she claimed. Russia is teasing its European clients. Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

In an interview with Sky News, Dominic Raab warned that the measure will turn Russia into an “economic pariah.” He went on to say that the action will have a “negative impact” on Moscow and further isolate it amid the conflict.
