The Jawaharlal Nehru University released an official press release clearing the air on the subject a day after Leftist student organizations attacked tenants of Kaveri Hostel during Ram Navami celebrations. The administration has issued an appeal to the students, urging them to “show restraint and allow the academic atmosphere at JNU to develop without any external distractions.”

The attack on Ram Navami celebrations in the Kaveri Hostel on Sunday was brought to the attention of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Monday, April 11. The JNU administration has issued an official statement condemning the ruckus after various versions of the incident emerged in the media from members of the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-wing student organizations such as the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the All India Students’ Association (AISA).

“On April 10, 2022, there was a skirmish between student groups on the JNU Campus.” It was Rama Navami, and the Kaveri Hostel students arranged a Hawan, to which some students objected. “The Hawan was peacefully completed after the wardens and Dean of Students attempted to calm the situation,” the statement said.

“However, some students were not pleased with this, and shortly after, at supper, a disturbance was made over there, with heated disagreements followed by an altercation between both groups in the Kaveri Hostel,” the statement said. The student committee is in charge of the mess, and the administration has no say in what is served. When there was a controversy among students, the Wardens explained the scene and published a notice stating “offering non-vegetarian food is not prohibited.”

“The warden issued a note appealing for peace and explaining concerns,” the statement said, referring to the administration’s quick actions to settle the situation. The JNU administration jumped into action right away. Later in the evening Prof. Santishree Dhulipadi Pandit, Vice-Chancellor of JNU, paid a visit to Kaveri Hostel to assess the situation. JNU has a long and illustrious history of educating and nurturing generations of students. It has traditionally been associated with scholarly and intellectual pursuits, as well as a strong culture of robust debates and discussions.”

What occurred on the night of Ram Navami?

On the occasion of Ram Navami, some members of the ABVP reportedly held a Hawan and Puja on the JNU campus on Sunday, April 10. The ABVP has accused the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and left-wing student organizations of preventing them from conducting the Hawan and Puja at the Kaveri Hostel on the JNU campus. Leftist students, on the other hand, claim that ABVP members fought with the mess management when non-vegetarian food was provided on Ram Navami day.

The celebrations ended in a hostile atmosphere, with numerous ABVP members hurt, including seven who suffered serious injuries.

A series of thefts marred the two-day Rolling Loud India music festival held in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, after four attendees reported that their gold chains—collectively valued at Rs 10.50 lakh—were stolen amid the massive crowd. The incidents occurred on Sunday evening, between 6 pm and 10 pm, during peak performances when thousands of fans had gathered near the stages.

According to police officials, the victims stated that their chains were forcibly pulled off their necks in the dense crowd without their notice. All four individuals have lodged formal complaints at the Kharghar Police Station, prompting authorities to begin an investigation. Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage, analyzing crowd movement, and checking for known pickpocket groups that typically target large gatherings.

The thefts have raised concerns about the security arrangements at the international festival, which saw heavy footfall throughout the weekend. This is not the first time such incidents have been reported at major concerts in the Mumbai region, with similar cases emerging during previous large-scale events.

Besides the thefts, attendees took to social media to express dissatisfaction over event logistics, particularly the significant distance between the two main stages, which made moving between performances difficult amid the crowd.

The police have assured attendees that efforts are underway to identify the culprits and recover the stolen jewellery. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
