A Navi Mumbai restaurant owner loses Rs 95,000 through online scam

A Koparkhairane restaurant owner who received a text message with a link claiming to be from HDFC Bank and asking her to re-verify her PAN card number by filling out information after clicking the link was scammed out of Rs 95,000 in a phishing case. In the FIR, complainant Gunjan Bansal (age 47) claims that she received a message from an anonymous caller on February 27 at approximately 8.30 p.m. urging her to update the information on her PAN card with HDFC bank. Yet, she disregarded such advice.

Around 11.30 am the following morning, Bansal wanted to transfer the funds from her HDFC account. The online banking screen closed shortly after she logged in. She made four attempts, but each time it continued closing. Bansal reasoned that perhaps she hadn’t updated the details on her PAN card with HDFC bank. She consequently noticed the PAN card update mail that she had received the day before. A page with the HDFC bank logo appeared as soon as she clicked the link in the mail. She entered her customer ID, password, and mobile number as instructed on the page.

She was then prompted to enter her date of birth and PAN card number on a new screen, which she did. She abandoned the process, though, after failing to get the OTP. About 7 o’clock in the evening, she received the OTP, at which point she reopened the link and entered all the necessary information. She got a new OTP on her phone right away. Rs 95,001 was deducted from her HDFC bank account as she entered the OTP, and she also received a text notification for the same amount on her phone. The moment Bansal realised that a bogus HDFC bank link had been sent, the cybercriminal had phished her bank information.

“I went to the HDFC bank branch and reported the theft of Rs 95,00 afterward. I was instructed by the bank manager to file a grievance form along with a copy of the police FIR in order to get restitution for the illegal transaction. Therefore, on Wednesday, I filed a FIR at the Koparkhairane police station. The HDFC bank manager explained that there was a computer server issue when I asked why their official website for online banking did not launch on February 27. Customers should have received a text message from the bank informing them of this technical issue, but they did not, according to Bansal.
