Three people are hurt in Thane as a leopard enters a housing society

Published

A difficult 9-hour rescue effort resulted in the successful capture of a leopard that had broken into a building at Chinchpada in Kalyan East on Thursday. Three persons were hurt as a result of the huge cat’s self-defence throughout this procedure. Thankfully, the Forest Department and the police made sure there weren’t any more events like this. But because so many people had arrived to witness the animal, their task was made difficult.

Speaking with sources, Thane Forest Department (Territorial) Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF), Santosh Saste stated, “In the operation that took place for close to 8-9 hours, the leopard that had entered a building in Kalyan was successfully tranquillized by our team. One of the most difficult operations our crew has been a part of.

The leopard entered Anurag Society in Kalyan East at 8 a.m. on Thursday. It is located close to Vitthalwadi. According to Thane District’s Honorary Wildlife Warden, Avinash Harad, “A local residing in the building told the forest department about the leopard.” The department advised locals to avoid provoking the leopard since it may attack them in self-defence. They were also advised to shut their doors and windows.

Not unexpected

The discovery of leopards in the region has startled several people, but Honorary Wildlife Warden Avinash Harad told PTI that it is not unexpected. On Thursday morning, hundreds of people gathered outside the structure to see the enormous cat. There have been several reports of leopard sightings in the Hajimalang forest, and there is a good possibility that this is where the leopard that entered the structure came from.

The adult leopard has been sent to Sanjay Gandhi National Park’s Leopard Rescue Center. The B wing of the society had to be evacuated by forest department workers in order to keep the throng away from the structure. There was a good likelihood that the leopard would cross the road and cause chaos.

Team effort

Together with workers from the forest department, a team of leopard rescuers from Thane and SGNP saved the large animal. During the rescue effort, volunteers from SEVA and the NGO Wildlife Welfare Association provided assistance. R N Channe, a Range Forest Officer (RFO), stated that saving the leopard was a very difficult undertaking.
