Leopard Sighting Triggers Fear in Kharghar Hills; Forest Department Steps Up Patrolling

Published

on

A leopard sighting reported by residents of Chafewadi Pada, a tribal hamlet on Kharghar Hill in Navi Mumbai, has sparked concern among locals and prompted swift action from the forest department. According to villagers, the big cat was spotted within their settlement earlier this week, raising fears of a possible human–wildlife conflict in the area. A similar sighting was reported nearly four months ago, when a leopard was seen moving from Chafewadi towards Phanaswadi. At that time, forest officials conducted detailed inspections but found no conclusive evidence of the animal’s presence.

Following the latest alert, forest authorities have intensified patrolling across vulnerable stretches of the hill region and have begun inspecting the area to verify the claims. Additional CCTV cameras have been installed and existing ones rechecked to capture any movement of wildlife. Officials, however, stated that no clear physical evidence—such as pugmarks or droppings—has been found so far.

Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media claiming to show a leopard in Kharghar Hills has been confirmed as not being from the area by the Range Forest Officer.

While no attacks or confrontations have been reported, the sighting has heightened anxiety among residents, especially those living close to forest patches. The department has urged locals to remain vigilant, avoid venturing near the hills during early morning or late evening hours, and immediately report any further sightings for prompt action.

Potholes and damaged roads to be fixed on key routes used for Ganesh idol processions and immersions.

The Repairs

With Ganeshotsav just around the corner, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up efforts to make city roads safer and smoother for residents and devotees.

NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed officials to inspect damaged roads and take up urgent repairs, with priority being given to routes that will witness the movement of large Ganesh idols and immersion processions.
