Lalu Prasad Yadav has been sentenced to five years in prison

In the Fodder fraud case, a special CBI court in Ranchi convicted former Bihar Chief Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chairman Lalu Prasad Yadav to five years in prison and a Rs 60 lakh fine. On February 15, the court found him guilty.

This is Yadav’s fifth and most serious fodder scam case. He was convicted in the last four identical incidents in 2013. He was there with 98 co-accused in the Doranda treasury case before Judge SK Shashi in Ranchi for the conviction.

The fodder fraud by Lalu

In 1996, the scandal was initially exposed. Lalu and his co-accused had skimmed off roughly Rs 950 crores over several years under the guise of spending on fodder and other cattle costs. During the investigation of the scam, the CBI registered 53 distinct cases. The largest of these cases was the Doranda Treasury case RC 47 (A)/96, which implicated the most people (170), including the RLD head, who was charged with embezzlement of Rs 139.5 crore in the case.

Convictions in the past for fodder fraud

On September 30, 2013, Lalu Prasad Yadav, also known as Chara Ghotala, was convicted for the first time in the Chaibasa treasury case. In the complaint, he has accused scams totaling Rs 37.30 crore. He was disqualified from the Lok Sabha and sentenced to five years in prison as a result of his conviction. In December 2013, the Supreme Court granted him bail. He was convicted again in December 2017 for his role in the illicit removal of Rs 89.27 lakh from the Deoghar treasury. While Lalu was sentenced to 42 months in prison, he was released on bail within six months in this instance.

Later that year, in January 2018, he got convicted to five years in prison for stealing Rs 33.13 crores from the Chaibasa treasury. A special court found him guilty of illegally withdrawing Rs 3.76 crores from the Dumka treasury in March of that year and condemned him to 14 years in prison.

The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Navi Mumbai Police arrested Jeorge Ocante DaSilva, a 35-year-old native of Guinea, on Monday for possessing 410 grams of cocaine, allegedly intended for illegal sale. Acting on a tip-off, API Alka Patil of the AHTU led a raid at RM Heights Building in Ulwe, where DaSilva was found in possession of the narcotics.

Around 2:30 p.m. on October 28, officers discovered 410 grams of cocaine, valued at approximately Rs 1,02,50,000, hidden in DaSilva’s bedroom. Authorities also seized a mobile phone, a black Tabata weighing scale, scissors, plastic packaging bags, and a sky bag, bringing the total seizure value to Rs 1,02,55,610.

An FIR was filed at Panvel City Police Station under Sections 8(a) and 21(a) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Dasilva was presented in court and remanded to police custody until October 31, 2024. Investigations are ongoing, with the Crime Branch seeking potential accomplices and sources of the narcotics. Notably, Dasilva has a prior NDPS case registered at Nahar Police Station in Mumbai.
