Civic authorities and Election Officers have urged local residents particularly newly eligible voters aged 18 and above to visit their local polling booths with valid proof of identity and residence. Officials highlighted that participating in these camps ensures individual details are accurately reflected in the 2026 electoral rolls ahead of upcoming administrative deadlines.

Outrage has erupted among animal welfare activists and local residents in the Ulwe node following shocking incidents of physical abuse against two stray dogs within a span of 24 hours.

The distressing acts came to light after local residents spotted a group of youths subjecting stray dogs to extreme cruelty in the area. Appalled by the animal abuse, local citizens and animal lovers immediately reported the matter to the authorities. Considering the short timeframe between the two consecutive occurrences, police suspect that the same culprit or group may be responsible for both acts of cruelty.

In response to the complaints, the Ulwe Police Station registered a formal case under relevant legal provisions, including the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Police officials have initiated an active investigation into the matter and are examining footage from surrounding CCTV cameras across the neighborhood to track down the suspects. Authorities have assured that strict legal action will be taken against those found guilty once identified.

Koparkhairane typist-clerk faces legal action under the Representation of the People Act for missing mandatory electoral roll checks.

The Duty

A 35-year-old typist-clerk employed at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Zone-2 office in Koparkhairane has been booked for neglecting official duties assigned under the ongoing electoral roll update.

The accused, Jeevan Sonawane, was appointed on July 15 as a Booth Level Officer (BLO) by Electoral Registration Officer Priti Patil. His task involved conducting door-to-door verification and distributing enumeration forms in the Bonkode area for the 150-Airoli Assembly constituency under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) program.

However, Sonawane remained absent from July 16 to July 23 without a valid reason, ignoring repeated directives and offers of assistance from senior staff. Following a formal complaint, Koparkhairane Ward Officer Bharat Dhande registered a First Information Report (FIR) at the Koparkhairane Police Station under Section 32 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, which penalizes election personnel for breach of duty.

NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde issued a stern warning, reiterating that any staff member neglecting SIR assignments will face strict legal consequences. While Sonawane reportedly promised to resume his BLO responsibilities from July 25 after the FIR was filed, officials clarified that further legal proceedings will be determined by the State Election Commission.
