Maharashtra Deputy CM warns of shutting down everything if covid third wave hits
Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar on Friday asked citizens to follow all the covid protocols and guidelines set by the government to contain the spread of the virus in the state. Expressing concerns over people letting their guard down against Covid-19 in rural areas Pawar urged citizens not to put the state government in a position where it has to shut everything in the event of a third wave of the pandemic.
“Unfortunately, in rural areas, some people are becoming lax. They are not scared of coronavirus. They don’t use masks, don’t follow physical distancing, and they have assumed that everything (Covid-19 pandemic) is over. This has led to rising in infections,” Pawar said.
Speaking to reporters, Pawar said the Centre has already cautioned all the states, citing that Kerala and Maharashtra have been reporting the highest number of cases. The chief minister has appealed to people from time to time, but some people politicize the issue and resort to celebrating festivals, he said.
“All this should stop somewhere. People should not put the state government and administrations in a position where they have to close everything if the third wave hits,” he appealed. When asked about the reopening of schools, Pawar said discussions are being held with the concerned experts and a decision will be taken.
“There are two opinions. Some say schools should open after Diwali, while others say they should be reopened in places where the Covid-19 positivity rate is zero. The chief minister, however, will make the decision,” he said.

Kharghar Doctors Remove 19-cm Toothbrush from Man’s Stomach Without Surgery
A 50-year-old autorickshaw driver from Pen accidentally swallowed the toothbrush while brushing his teeth and underwent a challenging 30-minute endoscopic procedure.
The Tooth Brush
In an unusual medical emergency, doctors at Medicover Hospitals in Kharghar successfully removed a 19-cm toothbrush from the stomach of a 50-year-old man who accidentally swallowed it while brushing his teeth. The procedure was completed without surgery.
The patient, Rajendra Malusare, an autorickshaw driver from Pen with a physical disability, experienced mild abdominal pain after swallowing the toothbrush. He initially visited a local physician, who advised an X-ray. However, the object was not detected, following which he was referred to Medicover Hospitals for further evaluation.
An endoscopy revealed that the entire toothbrush was lodged horizontally inside his stomach. Doctors decided to remove it through an endoscopic procedure to prevent complications such as intestinal blockage or perforation. Dr Raosaheb Rathod, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Medicover Hospitals, led the medical team. He explained that the rigid toothbrush became stuck at the junction between the stomach and food pipe and later near the upper oesophageal sphincter. After several careful manoeuvre and changes in the patient’s position, doctors successfully extracted it through the mouth.
A follow-up endoscopy confirmed that there was no injury to the food pipe or its sphincters. The patient’s condition improved, and he was discharged in a stable condition within a few hours. Doctors advised people not to induce vomiting or push swallowed foreign objects down with food, warning that such attempts could cause serious injuries. They stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention in such emergencies.
