22K Indians were evacuated via Operation Ganga : EAM Jaishankar

On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to the Parliament’s Upper House about the evacuation of Indians from Russia-invaded Ukraine. In his speech, EAM Jaishankar described how the Russian incursion had created a dangerous situation in Ukraine, putting over 20,000 citizens in danger. The EAM referred to their evacuation as the most important task, recalling the initiation of Operation Ganga, which resulted in the return of 22,500 Indians.

“Military actions, like bombing and shelling, were still ongoing when Operation Ganga was initiated. It required crossing a large country in a war-torn situation, at times over 1000 kilometres, and exiting border checkpoints clogged by an estimated 26 lakh refugees “According to Jaishankar, more than half of the students were enrolled in universities in eastern Ukraine, which borders Russia and has so far been the epicentre of conflict. According to the EAM, stranded students came from 35 Indian states and union territories, with over 1000 students from Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Rajasthan.

Jaishankar also seized the opportunity to emphasise the efforts made in the beginning, commencing with the Indian Embassy in Ukraine’s registration drive in January. “In light of the continuous escalation of tensions in February, the Embassy issued an advice on February 15, 2022, as well as February 20 and 22 recommending Indians in Ukraine whose stay is not required to leave the country temporarily,” the EAM said, adding that the nationals were hesitant.

‘The exercise entailed the entire Government of India’s strategy.’

Returning to Operation Ganga, S Jaishankar stated that the entire operation required a whole-of-government approach, with the Prime Minister himself chairing review sessions on a near-daily basis. “We supervised Operation Ganga’s evacuation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Ministry of External Affairs. All responsible ministries and organisations, including the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Defence, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Air Force (IAF), and private airlines like IndiGo and SpiceJet, provided us with outstanding cooperation “According to EAM.

Adding to that, “76 civilian planes and 14 IAF flights were undertaken as part of Operation Ganga. Romania, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia all sent evacuation flights. To help Operation Ganga, the Prime Minister dispatched four Union Ministers as special envoys to Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland. Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kiren Rijiju, Hardeep Singh Puri, and Gen VK Singh travelled to Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland, respectively.” Despite the government’s best efforts, Naveen Shekerappa was murdered in shelling in Kharkiv, while Harjot Singh was injured in firing in Kyiv, according to S Jaishankar.

‘India’s position is unwavering.’

India’s position on the issue, according to the EAM, is “consistent.” “We have requested a ceasefire before the United Nations Security Council. The sovereignty and integrity of the states are in jeopardy as a result of the ongoing conflict, as we have stated. We have economic relations with both Russia and Ukraine, and these are difficult times for both countries. We shall, however, answer with bravery and resolve “He expressed himself.
