The State government included 14 villages in the NMMC boundaries.

The Decision

The government has formally declared the addition of fourteen villages from the Khoni group of Kalyan taluka into the boundaries of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), marking a significant move intended to improve administrative coverage and municipal services. Long expected by locals and representatives, the decision represents a significant turning point in the continuous efforts to improve administration and cater to the needs of these communities and its inhabitants.

The announcement, released on March 7, 2024, represents the end of months of detailed discussions and arguments. Once these fourteen villages were included into Navi Mumbai’s administrative structure, they would be able to operate for municipal hall in the future. These villages were previously located close to Shil Phata.

There were difficulties along the way to this progress. Tensions erupted when local villagers voiced their strong opposition following the villages’ inclusion in the NMMC during the second general election, leading to terrible events. But the villagers’ tenacity and will did not waver, as seen by their ongoing demonstrations and lobbying activities since 2015.

Agri Koli Bhumiputra and Koyna project rehabilitated populations predominate in the picturesque villages of Dahisar, Mokashi, Valivali, Pimpri, Nighu, Navali, Vaklan, Bamarli, Narivali, Bale, Nagaon, Uttar Shiv, and Goteghar that are impacted by this decision. They are part of the NMMC, although their representation in the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha has not changed.

The municipal administration will now be in charge of property concerns and administrative duties that were previously under the jurisdiction of the Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad. This change will take effect immediately.

The Chairman of the 14 Village Development Committee, Sakshana Patil, conveyed her appreciation for the triumphant end of an eight-year battle and emphasized the villagers’ tenacity and commitment in fighting for their rights and integration into the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
