1 acre of CRZ property and mangroves were lost to the sand mafia in Navi Mumbai

In Taloja Creek, between the Sion-Panvel highway bridge and the railway bridge, almost an acre of environmentally sensitive CRZ land with mangroves has reportedly been lost as a result of illicit sand mining. A few more small islands on both sides of the creek are also being destroyed. Since this stream is on CRZ territory and there are no longer any traditional fisherman living here, activists have called for a restriction on boat traffic in the area. An activist stated, “Fishing by locals is no longer done here. Satellite images indicate how the little island had lost its existence to excessive sand dredging. Mangrove-covered islets on both sides of the stream have suffered some destruction. Thus, all forms of watercraft must be prohibited.

“Local revenue officials and other employees work hand in hand with illegal sand dredgers and so-called fishermen who own boats. Their actions only result in the confiscation of boats, sand, and police complaints against unidentified people with no arrests, according to Kamothe resident S S Mhatre. Five unauthorised huts have sprouted up in mangroves as a result of dumping and bund construction, according to Vilas Kalange, a resident of Kamothe’s sector 36. Mangroves are purposefully destroyed for fishing and sand dredging. All of this must be stopped. According to Adarsh Reddy, deputy conservator of the forest-mangrove cell in Thane, there has been significant progress over the past two months due to continuous checking.

A joint committee will investigate the situation, according to assistant principal chief conservator of forest-mangroves Virendra Tiwari. Subdivisional Officer Rahul Mundake of Panvel stated, “A squad is deputed there everyday to monitor illicit activities. Santosh Kachare, a circle officer in Panvel, declared that they would purchase boats because private boat owners would be intimidated if they used their vessels to fight the sand mafia.
