Water taxis receives low response in Navi Mumbai

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has resolved to meet with the operators of the Belapur-Gateway water taxi service to talk ways to increase the number of passengers using the boats after the service received a poor response from daily commuters.
“We’ve arranged a meeting with the boat operators to talk about how to increase resident interest in the Belapur to Gateway route. Despite the 200-seater boat designated for ferrying, the bookings received only include around 20 passengers. It is not practical for the operators to run the ship with such a low figure. In order to ensure that at least the normal passengers are not turned away, a 50-seater boat was operated, according to Captain Praveen Khara, Chief Port Officer, MMB.
The high fare is one of the main factors cited for the route’s failure to take off. On weekdays, transportation to Gateway cost passengers 300. “The prices charged are already heavily discounted. However, we won’t understand the reasons in full until we meet with the relevant operators,” said Khara.
On February 8, a 200-seat boat was used to restart the water taxi services. At the wharf right now, two boating companies are offering transportation services. While the path to Mandwa is run on weekends, the route to Gateway is run during the week.
Even the 50-seater speed boat used to transport people to Gateway and Mandwa has experienced technical problems, raising questions about the services as a whole while the 200-seater Nayan XI is still berthed at the jetty.
These services are designed without adequate research. A poll was ideally required to determine the need for such a transportation system. People who commute everyday are unlikely to choose water taxi services with low frequency and expensive fares given that local trains offer effective services, according to Bharat Gupta, a resident of Nerul.
Operators, however, are optimistic about the route’s future growth in appeal.
We’ve only been running the services for a month, but we’re confident we’ll discover a solution. The Gateway route has in fact fallen short of predictions, but the Mandwa route is proving to be a huge success. On the weekends, we get around 100 reservations on average. The operator working with Nayan XI promised that the technical problem with the 50-seater would be fixed as soon as possible and that services would recommence in full force.

Agri Community Calls Special Meeting to Demand Navi Mumbai Airport Be Named After D.B. Patil

The Agri community, along with like-minded associations, has convened a special meeting to reinforce their demand for naming the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport after social activist D.B. Patil.
The meeting, organized by the All Party Action Committee and Akhil Agri Samaj Parishad, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Navi Mumbai Sports Association.
“This meeting aims to reiterate the long-standing demand of the local residents. D.B. Patil was a revered leader who fought for farmers’ rights, particularly during the government’s land acquisitions in the 1970s,” said an official.
The demand to name the airport after D.B. Patil has received widespread support. A resolution proposing the name D.B. Patil International Airport was previously passed and submitted to the Union government. While the Centre has approved the proposal, a formal notification is still awaited.
The meeting will focus on strategies to expedite the official announcement and ensure that the resolution is implemented without further delay.
The Agri community and supporting organizations remain firm in their stance, emphasizing that the airport should honor the legacy of a leader who championed the cause of local farmers.

Navi Mumbai Director Duped of ₹60 Lakh in WhatsApp DP Fraud

A 52-year-old director of a Thane-based private company lost Rs60 lakh to a fraudster who impersonated another director by using his photograph as a WhatsApp display picture (DP).
According to the police, the complainant, a Navi Mumbai resident, is one of the three directors of the company. On February 5, he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number, with the sender claiming to be another director, who was in Dubai, and stating that it was his new number.
The next day, the fraudster inquired about the company’s account balance. Believing he was communicating with his colleague—whose photo appeared as the WhatsApp DP—the complainant provided the details. The fraudster then requested an urgent transfer of Rs60 lakh, citing funding needs for a project.
Without suspecting foul play, the complainant instructed the company’s accountant to transfer the amount to the account provided by the fraudster. However, after the transaction, the real director in Dubai contacted him, inquiring about the large sum. Shocked, the complainant realized he had been duped through WhatsApp DP fraud.
The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. Officials have warned the public to verify fund transfer requests and avoid relying solely on WhatsApp display pictures for identity confirmation.
