Up till the end of January, Navi Mumbai LiDAR property survey
Technical issues have caused a delay in the first-ever Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) property survey being carried out in Navi Mumbai. The 21.90 crore survey has now been extended till the end of January.
To help the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) update information on all properties in the city and compile tax bills for the upcoming fiscal year, a survey is being conducted.
According to the NMMC’s data, the city has about 3 lakh properties. However, the concerned officials said that the LiDAR study may identify up to 75,000 more homes.
There are a number of rental properties, but only regular property tax is collected from them, resulting in a significant loss of revenue for the local body. Additionally, some properties have grown but are not included.
Abhijit Bangar, the Thane municipal commissioner who also oversees the NMMC at the moment, has promised to look into the matter.
When he was in charge of the NMMC, Bangar was interested in the LiDAR survey and declared, “I will soon visit the NMMC headquarters and have a review meeting of the survey status. It was supposed to be finished by the end of October.
It must be finished as soon as possible. If not, it will cause issues when creating the property tax invoices for the upcoming fiscal year beginning in April 2023,” he continued.
Rajesh Narvekar, commissioner of the NMMC, commented on the purpose of the survey by saying, “Over the years, rising urbanisation has resulted in a spike of properties under the NMMC. Additionally, people have added on to their homes. We will have an up-to-date and accurate record of all the properties under our authority thanks to the 360-degree complete survey of all properties being conducted utilising geographic information system (GIS) mapping based on LiDAR technology.
Property tax is a significant source of income for the civic body, particularly since that local body tax is outside of its authority. According to Narvekar, “There has been an increase in the properties that have come up in the city since the NMMC was created in 1992. It will assist guarantee accurate data is gathered on the number of properties, the number of units in each structure, and commercial buildings if the most recent technology is employed for the survey.
According to the commissioner of the NMMC, this will guarantee additional income without needing to raise the tax rate. “Since we will have comprehensive information about civic-owned properties, the survey will also help us develop the city more effectively. The assessment would include details on public utilities including water pipes, sewage lines, lighting, and other facilities, he continued.
Using LiDAR technology, the NMMC is conducting two different types of surveys of the properties in the city. To guarantee the correctness of the data, GCPs are being erected at 12 different base station marking sites. Ground control points (GCP) are being placed at 12 places for base station marking in order to guarantee the accuracy of the GIS data gathered during the survey.

MNS Exposes Alleged Fake Voters in Navi Mumbai Through Photo Exhibition
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) held a unique photo exhibition in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, to highlight alleged irregularities in the city’s voter list ahead of the upcoming civic elections. The exhibition, inaugurated by Amit Thackeray, displayed photographs and details of voters reportedly registered at invalid or unusual addresses.
According to MNS officials, several names were found listed at locations such as public toilets, footpaths, roadsides, railway stations, and even the municipal commissioner’s residence. The party claimed that around 127 voters were registered at the commissioner’s residence, 250 voters along Palm Beach Road, and multiple entries at other non-residential areas across the city.
Party leaders said the aim was to draw attention to the issue of bogus voter registrations and demand corrective action from election authorities to ensure fair and transparent elections. “This exhibition exposes how thousands of fake voters could influence the outcome of civic polls if not rectified,” said an MNS representative during the event.
However, the Thane District Administration refuted the allegations, stating that no fake voter registrations were recorded at those addresses. Officials clarified that certain entries merely used landmarks such as ‘Nerul Railway Station’ or similar references for voter location purposes, not as actual residential addresses.
The MNS has urged the State Election Commission to initiate a thorough verification drive to clean up the electoral rolls and maintain the integrity of the democratic process in Navi Mumbai.

Navi Mumbai Couple Booked for Cheating Tenants of ₹25 Lakh
The Kharghar police have registered a case against a Navi Mumbai-based couple for allegedly cheating three tenants of a combined sum of Rs 25 lakh by promising them rental flats that were never handed over. The accused have been identified as Krishna Poojari and Geetha Poojari, residents of Meghna Heights in Sector 34A, Kharghar.
According to police sources, between April and June 2024, the couple entered into registered rental agreements with three individuals, offering them flats in the same building — one on the 9th floor and two on the 8th floor. Instead of charging monthly rent, the Poojaris allegedly collected large “one-time deposits” from each tenant, assuring them possession of the flats. However, after receiving the money, they neither handed over the flats nor refunded the deposits.
When repeated requests for refunds went unanswered, the victims approached the police. Following an investigation, the Kharghar police station registered an FIR against the couple for cheating, criminal breach of trust, dishonest inducement, and criminal intimidation under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Officials stated that efforts are underway to trace the accused, who are currently untraceable. The police have also appealed to other possible victims to come forward, suspecting that more people might have been duped using the same fraudulent rental scheme.
