Sreejesh says his next goal is to win a World Cup medal
P R Sreejesh is in the latter of his career at 33, but the veteran Indian hockey goalkeeper isn’t ready to call it a day just yet. He wants to add a World Cup medal to his Tokyo Olympics bronze before deciding on his future path.
Sreejesh, who debuted for the senior team in 2006, is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Sreejesh, who led India to the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rio Olympics, was also a member of the 2014 Asian Games gold-medal-winning team, but his most treasured ambition was realised in last year’s Tokyo Olympics when India won a historic bronze medal after a 41-year gap.
However, the senior custodian remains unsatisfied, aiming to win a World Cup medal next year before deciding on his future, which includes competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“The Olympic medal was a dream come true, but I still have a chance to improve the gold’s colour. The year 2022 is crucial for us, since it kicks off with the FIH Pro League, followed by the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games “Sreejesh became only the second Indian to receive the ‘World Games Athlete of the Year’ award, following women’s team captain Rani Rampal.
“We’ll get a direct berth in the Paris Olympics if we win the Asian Games, so that’s an added incentive. We failed to qualify for the semi-finals at the last World Cup, so earning a medal at the World Cup will complete my aim.”
Setting short-term goals is now Sreejesh’s top priority, and he says he will not hesitate to abandon the game if he loses motivation.
“Right now, we’re concentrating on the upcoming Olympic cycle, which begins this year.” The Pro League, for starters, will assist us in establishing a solid foundation. ” Age isn’t a major factor for goalkeepers. It all comes down to your enthusiasm for the game. I don’t have any long-term goals set for myself. The World Cup, which will be held in India, is my next short-term aim, he stated.
When asked what motivates him to go to work every day, Sreejesh says: “Not everyone is eligible to wear the blue jersey. Only a few people are fortunate enough to be given that opportunity, but you must work hard to achieve it, and this is what motivates you.”
After a six-month absence, Sreejesh will re-join the Indian team for the forthcoming FIH Pro League matches against South Africa and France, which will be hosted in Potchefstroom from February 8 to 13.
After the Tokyo Olympics, the veteran goalie says the break helped him re-energize.
“It was much-needed to take a vacation. It aided in the formation of a link between me and my family. We went on vacation, and the kids had a great time. My family and I spend some quality time together. For me, the vacation was a refreshing experience “Sreejesh explained.

At Sanpada, NMMC will construct a 50-meter shooting range
The city of Navi Mumbai will soon have a 50-meter shooting lane for use by both beginners and pros during practise and training sessions. The municipal corporation is currently building a cutting-edge archery facility in Sector 10 of Sanpada after creating a multisport complex underneath the Sanpada flypast that went popular on social media.
This Olympic sport is also performed at the district level with a lot of passion, with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation serving as the venue. The engineering department has already given its preliminary clearance for a project that will cost 92 lakh, and the tendering procedure has already begun.
“This activity has a lot of enthusiasm, and even at the district school level events, we have over 50 or so competitors. Since India consistently wins the best honours at the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, such high-quality facilities may open the door for more gifted archers, according to NMMC’s Sports Officer R Gurav.
The D.V. Patil Master Ground in Sector 10 of Sanpada has been chosen as the location for building the substructure, and it measures 1,500 square feet. On the property, shooting facilities would be constructed both inside and outside.
There are intentions to build a 30-m indoor shooting lane that can be used during monsoons, as well as a 50-m external shooting range, as far as civic construction is concerned. The facility should be available in eight months after the finalisation of the tender offers, according to executive engineer Sanjay E. Patil, who also completed the preliminary map work. Fifty bows and arrows will be available for practise in the building.
Currently, in order to practise the sport, archery players must either enrol in individual lessons or journey outside of the metropolis. We are confident that the facility’s expansion will increase enthusiasm in the sport, said Rajendra Narvekar, the municipal commissioner.

Ricky Ponting forecasts a very bright future for three Indian cricketers
During his interview with former England player Isha Guha on ‘The ICC Review,’ Australian cricket star Ricky Ponting highlighted three young Indian cricketers and made bold predictions about them. Following his retirement from international cricket as a player, Ponting has become a familiar face in the Indian Premier League (IPL), coaching teams such as the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. Ponting, who has been watching the growth of several young Indian cricket prospects from afar, has picked openers Prithvi Shaw and Ruturaj Gaikwad, as well as bowler Avesh Khan, as the players to watch.
Prithvi Shaw, who plays for the Delhi Capitals (DC) and is coached by Ponting, has been retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. “Everyone’s known a bit about him over the last few of years,” Ponting added, according to ICC, recalling Shaw’s great form in the IPL 2021 season. I believe he is still learning a lot about himself as a person and as a player. To be completely honest, I don’t think I’ve seen much better.” Shaw does not want to bat a lot when he is hitting a lot, but when he is batting well, he wants to bat all the time, according to Ponting.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, according to Ponting, will represent India in all three formats.
Ponting also said that after having a chance early in the season, he ended up being a part of the IPL winning team, praising Chennai Super Kings player Ruturaj Gaikwad. “Everyone thought he was a nice player, more of a technically correct sort of player, but by the end of the IPL, he was doing some wonderful things,” Ponting added, before predicting that Gaikwad will play for India in all three forms in the future.
Meanwhile, Ponting talked about Avesh Khan, an uncapped Indian cricketer who came second in the IPL 2021 in terms of wickets taken.
“Last year, we had Avesh Khan at Delhi Capitals, who had an unbelievable IPL season.” On The ICC Review, Ponting stated, “He has been included in a few of Indian selections.”
