Smoke Pollution Troubles Vashi Residents; Children and Elderly Worst Affected
Rising smoke pollution in Vashi has once again sparked health concerns, with residents reporting severe discomfort during early mornings and late nights. Children and the elderly are the worst affected, facing eye irritation, throat scratching, and breathing difficulties.
Sector 26 has emerged as the most affected area, though residents from Sectors 28, 29, Turbhe, and Koparkhairane have also lodged complaints. Locals allege that the pollution stems from nearby zinc casting units in semi-industrial pockets, which release heavy smoke and dust particles late at night. These emissions reportedly settle across residential neighborhoods, worsening air quality.
According to data from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the Vashi-Kopri belt was around 80 at 6 am—classified as “moderate.” However, particulate matter readings—PM2.5 at 24.7 µg/m³ and PM10 at 39.1 µg/m³—pose risks for vulnerable groups such as young children, asthma patients, and senior citizens.
Residents have urged stricter action against polluting industries, regular inspections, and the development of green belts to curb the crisis. Some have also demanded night-time monitoring, as the smoke problem reportedly peaks after dark.
In response, MPCB officials said the issue will be reviewed, with increased patrols and stricter checks on factories. Authorities are also considering mitigative steps, including fogging systems and localized pollution control measures.
The recurring problem has raised concerns about long-term health impacts and environmental negligence in Navi Mumbai’s residential-industrial zones.

NMMC Steps Up Road Repairs Ahead of Ganeshotsav
Potholes and damaged roads to be fixed on key routes used for Ganesh idol processions and immersions.
The Repairs
With Ganeshotsav just around the corner, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up efforts to make city roads safer and smoother for residents and devotees.
NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed officials to inspect damaged roads and take up urgent repairs, with priority being given to routes that will witness the movement of large Ganesh idols and immersion processions. Engineering teams are inspecting roads for potholes, uneven surfaces, damaged manholes and problems with storm-water drains. Since the monsoon is still active, temporary repairs are being carried out using materials such as cold mix and mastic geopolymer. Permanent road surfacing will be taken up once there is a sufficient break in the rainfall.
To improve monitoring, officials are also geo-tagging potholes so that their locations can be tracked and repairs can be completed without missing important stretches. The civic body is also working on improving street lighting, cleanliness and facilities at immersion points to make the festival more convenient for citizens.
For many residents, smooth roads are more than just a civic issue during Ganeshotsav they are essential for ensuring that processions can move safely and families can participate in the celebrations without worrying about potholes and damaged stretches. NMMC has also appealed to citizens to cooperate with the civic authorities and celebrate the festival responsibly, while keeping the city clean and environmentally friendly.
