Sludge removal at Belapur Pond begins by NMMC

Published

Due to the lack of desilting of the holding pond and upstream nullah, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken on the difficult task of clearing the obstruction at the mouth of the Belapur holding pond by using heavy machinery in anticipation of the upcoming monsoon. This will prevent flooding in the node, which has been occurring annually. In the event of a rainfall occurring at the same time as high tide, a heavy duty pump of 100 horsepower is also being constructed to remove the extra water in the holding pond. Storm water will be able to flow freely after very heavy rain because to this significant desilting of the pond’s entry site.

The work is being done as a flood control exercise, according to NMMC. The civic body is currently putting together a thorough study report to be given to the relevant department in order to clean the holding pond and perform revamping work without disturbing the marine plants. In order to obtain approval for cleaning all 12 holding ponds throughout the city, including the Belapur holding pond that is most affected, without harming the marine green cover, NMMC has enlisted the help of IIT-Bombay and Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON).

The holding pond in Belapur has accumulated muck, which reduces its ability to hold water and the amount of mangroves there. MCZMA and NMMC are addressing this issue. Sanjay Desai, municipal engineer for NMMC, is removing impediments close to the flap gate to allow rainwater to flow. Desai intends to request authorization from MCZMA to desilt the pond.

Crackdown Targets Mule Account Holders and Facilitators Channeling Illicit Funds for Cyber Fraud Syndicates.

The Crack Down

In a significant move against organized digital fraud, the Navi Mumbai Police have launched an extensive crackdown on key enablers and facilitators powering cybercrime networks across the region.

The law enforcement initiative focuses on individuals who rent, sell, or operate “mule” bank accounts and fraudulent SIM cards. These intermediaries serve as crucial links for cyber syndicates, allowing fraudsters to process, layer, and divert millions of rupees stolen through various online scams—including investment fraud, illegal gaming apps, and phishing schemes.

Investigators revealed that these accounts are often opened using falsified documents or by offering small financial incentives to vulnerable individuals. Once created, the account credentials, passbooks, ATM cards, and linked SIM cards are handed over to criminal rings to rapidly transfer illicit funds before law enforcement can trace or freeze them.

Police officials warned that individuals permitting their bank accounts or identity documents to be used for illegal transactions will face severe criminal prosecution as co-conspirators under cybercrime laws. Authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant, avoid sharing personal banking credentials, and immediately report suspicious financial activity or cyber fraud through the national helpline 1930.
