The Drive

In a bid to make local roads safer for daily commuters, the Turbhe Traffic Police joined forces with local students and faculty members to host a high-impact traffic safety awareness drive and helmet rally.

The event saw enthusiastic participation, with around 90 students, 20 institute staff members, and traffic officers coming together on 60 bikes. Covering a 20-kilometer route, the rally hit the streets to deliver a clear message to motorists: wearing a helmet and respecting basic traffic rules can mean the difference between life and death.

The rally was officially flagged off by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Navi Mumbai) Arun Patil alongside academic leaders. Addressing the gathering, organizers emphasized that safe driving habits must start early. While wearing a helmet might feel uncomfortable or inconvenient to some at first, building the habit is essential for protecting human lives and curbing preventable road fatalities.

By engaging young motorists directly, the initiative aimed to turn students into active ambassadors for road safety. Traffic officials expressed hope that the message resonates beyond the classroom, encouraging families and everyday commuters across Navi Mumbai to prioritize safety every time they step onto the road.

The Complaints

Everyday suburban commuters along Navi Mumbai’s Airoli–Belapur stretch may soon get relief from broken stairs, foul-smelling toilets, and endless ticket queues.

Following a meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday between Thane MP Naresh Mhaske and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Railway Ministry directed Central Railway officials to urgently redevelop and repair 10 key stations along the corridor.

The directive covers Airoli, Rabale, Ghansoli, Koparkhairane, Turbhe, Sanpada, Juinagar, Nerul, Seawoods–Darave, and Belapur. During the meeting, Mhaske highlighted the everyday struggles of daily commuters. At stations like Airoli, Rabale, Juinagar, and Nerul, shut ticket windows regularly force passengers into long, chaotic lines. Meanwhile, foot overbridges and staircases have fallen into disrepair, posing safety risks during peak hours.

Cleanliness and basic facilities were another major focus. Heavy dust, unhygienic toilets, poor lighting, and a lack of clean drinking water remain constant issues at stations including Ghansoli, Turbhe, and Sanpada.

In response, Minister Vaishnaw ordered Central Railway to execute immediate repairs on damaged staircases, foot overbridges, and seating. Directives were also issued to modernize station toilets with round-the-clock cleaning, ensure continuous drinking water, reopen all closed ticket windows, and install brighter LED lighting.

To improve passenger safety after dark, night patrolling by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Police will also be stepped up across the entire stretch.

Indiscriminate parking on footpaths and narrow sectors forces pedestrians into traffic, as citizens urge traffic police and NMMC for immediate action.

The Demand

For residents stepping out into the streets of Vashi, Belapur, or Kharghar, a simple walk has turned into a daily obstacle course. Across several nodes of Navi Mumbai, illegally parked cars, commercial trucks, and double-parked vehicles have completely taken over main roads and pedestrian footpaths.

The mounting frustration among locals isn’t just about traffic delays it’s a growing safety hazard. With sidewalks blocked by vehicles, pedestrians including school children and senior citizens are forced onto busy lanes directly alongside speeding traffic.

Beyond dangerous blind spots that trigger frequent minor collisions, the bottlenecked roads pose a serious threat during emergencies. Narrowed sector lanes frequently delay fire engines and ambulances attempting to navigate residential pockets.

“Our footpaths are built for walking, not as free storage for private cars,” said a frustrated resident from Nerul. “When emergency vehicles can barely squeeze through internal roads, it becomes a safety risk for the whole neighborhood.”

Citizens are urging the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and the local Traffic Police to launch stricter enforcement drives, towing persistent violators and levying heavy fines. Residents are also advocating for long-term solutions, such as dedicated commercial vehicle zones and functional multi-level parking facilities, to finally clear the city’s crowded roadways.
