Sharad Pawar Met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss farm issues
According to sources, NCP supremo and Rajya Sabha MP Sharad Pawar met PM Modi in Parliament for over 20 minutes. While NCP sources claim that solely agricultural matters were discussed between the two leaders, the meeting is significant given Maharashtra’s political position. To begin with, two major NCP leaders, present state Cabinet Minister Nawab Malik, and former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh are currently incarcerated in connection with central government proceedings.
Furthermore, Congress leaders have frequently expressed their dissatisfaction with the MVA government’s treatment of them. On Tuesday night, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, along with MLAs from other parties, dined at Pawar’s home. The legislators were in Delhi, according to sources, for a training session for first-time MLAs.
Maharashtra has NCP-BJP connections.
Just after the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly election, the NCP pledged unequivocal support to the saffron party in the establishment of a government. While Devendra Fadnavis was able to secure a majority on the House floor with the NCP’s help, the relationship between the two parties deteriorated once Shiv Sena entered the government. Despite winning a strong majority in the 2019 polls, the NDA was unable to form a government due to Shiv Sena’s demand for a rotating chief minister.
On November 12th, President’s Rule was declared in Maharashtra since none of the main political parties could muster enough votes to form a government. In the NCP, Shiv Sena, and Congress camps, frantic negotiations were underway to form a post-poll coalition in the state. The opposition, however, was stumped by NCP Legislative Party leader Ajit Pawar’s decision to join forces with the BJP to establish the government on November 23, 2019. After Sharad Pawar stated that he did not accept his nephew’s move, Fadnavis was forced to resign as Chief Minister in three days, followed by the swearing-in of the MVA administration.
Sharad Pawar, according to Nawab Malik, rejected PM Modi’s offer to establish a BJP-NCP administration in the state. In March of last year, after a secret meeting between Pawar and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Ahmedabad, talk about a possible change of guard in Maharashtra was prevalent. While the NCP denied the meeting took transpired, Shah’s statement that “not everything can be made public” was interpreted as an admission that it did.
