A shocking case of online cyber fraud has surfaced in Panvel, where a senior citizen was cheated of Rs 74 lakh within just 34 days, highlighting the growing threat of digital scams targeting unsuspecting individuals. The incident was reported from the Karanjade area, and a case has been registered by Panvel City Police against unknown cyber fraudsters.

According to the police, the victim is a 59-year-old retired man residing in a housing society in Karanjade. Between November 28 and January 1, he was contacted by unidentified individuals who lured him with promises of high returns through share market investments. To gain his trust, the fraudsters initially showed him fake profits and even returned a small amount, making the scheme appear genuine.

The accused also persuaded the victim to download an online application that displayed inflated investment gains. Believing the profits shown on the app, the senior citizen transferred money in multiple installments to different bank accounts provided by the fraudsters. Over time, the total amount transferred reached Rs 74 lakh.

The scam came to light when the victim attempted to withdraw his funds and realized that the money was no longer accessible. Suspecting fraud, he immediately approached the police and filed a complaint.

Police have launched an investigation and are tracing the bank accounts and digital trail linked to the transactions. Authorities have once again urged citizens to remain cautious of unsolicited investment offers, avoid sharing financial details, and verify platforms before investing, especially in online schemes promising unusually high returns.

The Issues

Residents of Annasaheb Patil Cooperative Housing Society in Nerul Sector 8 are set to get relief from a long-pending sewage problem, with improvement work on the society’s sewage pipelines beginning recently. The work was inaugurated by Mayor Sujata Patil in the presence of BJP corporator Suraj Patil and local residents. The project was approved through the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) following repeated follow-up by the elected representatives.

The existing sewage infrastructure has been under pressure due to an increase in the number of families living in the society. Residents have reportedly faced recurring problems, making the pipeline improvement work an important requirement. Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor Sujata Patil said that although discussions on the redevelopment of the housing society were underway, the process would take time. Addressing the immediate civic needs of residents was therefore necessary.

She said that fulfilling the commitments made to citizens during the elections would remain a priority and that efforts would be made to improve basic amenities and bring wider development to Ward 23.

Corporator Suraj Patil said the sewage project was only the beginning of their development plans for the ward.
