Sajag Nagarik Manch Demands Public Disclosure of Corporators’ Fund Utilization

Published

As Maharashtra prepares for the upcoming municipal corporation elections, the Sajag Nagarik Manch has submitted a formal memorandum to the Chief Minister’s Office, demanding that all municipal corporations in the state publish detailed records of corporators’ development fund utilization on their official websites.

The Manch stressed that this step is crucial to fulfill the government’s long-standing promises of transparent governance. “While leaders at all levels — from the Prime Minister to local corporators — frequently assure citizens of transparency, the actual expenditure of corporators’ funds remain hidden from public scrutiny. This is nothing but ‘action-less transparency,’” said a Manch member.

The memorandum also recalled Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s earlier 100-day action plan to improve governance transparency and highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently championed open administration. “Despite such commitments, citizens still lack access to basic information on how their tax money is being used at the local level,” the Manch pointed out.

With civic polls nearing, the Manch warned that political parties will again promise clean governance, but without concrete action, these may remain hollow slogans. They emphasized that democracy is not just about voting but making informed choices. Many candidates in the upcoming elections are former corporators, and voters must know how these individuals managed public funds during their previous terms.

Sandeep Thakur, advisor to Sajag Nagarik Manch, remarked, “If even after 75 years of independence, local governance remains opaque, it is a defeat of democracy.” The Manch urged the government to ensure immediate public disclosure of corporators’ fund details.
