Numerous public structures built by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) in the Sanpada division of Navi Mumbai at a cost of crores of rupees for the benefit of the inhabitants remain unused and are accumulating dust.

A multipurpose facility for women’s empowerment, a 40+ cricket office and a senior citizens’ centre, built at Plot Nos. 515A and 515B in Sector 5 Sanpada, are a few of the structures that have been vacant. The building has been finished for more than a year but has not yet been officially opened; the estimated cost of the construction was above one crore.

Similar to this, a public gymnasium was constructed on the grounds of the NMMC School in Sector 5 in Sanpada in 2017 for a cost of 57 lakhs, with 50 lakhs coming from the MP budget and the remaining amount coming from the NMMC treasury. 2019 saw the gymnasium’s completion and official opening by politicians. It is still shuttered, nevertheless, and has deteriorated with shattered windows and steel fences.

At a cost of more than Rs. 1 crore, a daily market complex was also built in Sector 4 Sanpada in 2020 to facilitate the convenience of vegetable, fruit, flower, and seafood vendors. But the building has remained vacant for two years, which is difficult for the sellers.

“Frustration among the general public is evident even after spending billions of rupees on government initiatives. Officials at NMMC appear to be purposefully disregarding the project. The shuttered building should be utilised right away, according to social worker Nilesh Kachare, by looking at these projects through us.

Navi Mumbai Police Bust Inter-District Gang Targeting Senior Citizens Inside Housing Societies

The Central Crime Branch of Navi Mumbai Police has busted an inter-district gang targeting elderly women inside housing societies to snatch gold chains and mangalsutras, arresting three suspects identified as Riyaz Ramzan Shaikh, Jamalbadshah Manirul Gazi, and Ashik Billa Gazi.

The police recovered stolen goods worth Rs 12 lakh from the trio, including 95 grams of gold ornaments and two motorcycles used in the commission of the crimes. The investigation was triggered by a chain-snatching incident in Khandeshwar on May 15, where CCTV footage clearly captured one of the suspects.

By matching the visuals with criminal databases, technical intelligence, and local informant tips, police traced the gang to Mira Road and Bihar. Investigations revealed that the gang specifically entered residential complexes to target senior citizens before escaping on stolen two-wheelers using familiar local shortcuts, which one suspect knew well from his prior employment in Kamothe.

To evade law enforcement, the culprits would quickly sell the stolen gold in the region and flee to their native villages in West Bengal and Bihar. With their arrest, the police have solved at least nine cases of theft and robbery across Navi Mumbai, Mira Road, and neighboring areas. The accused, who carry prior charges involving vehicle theft and drug trafficking, have been remanded to judicial custody as authorities work to curtail similar residential property crimes.
