Political Lobbying Intensifies in NMMC’s Urban Planning Department Amid Redevelopment Boom
Intense political lobbying has reportedly gripped the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) Urban Planning and Engineering departments following the state government’s approval of the new development plan. With redevelopment projects in Vashi, Nerul, CBD, and Sanpada gaining momentum, ministers, their aides, and senior officials are allegedly exerting pressure to secure control over key posts.
According to sources, influential engineers are vying for authority over high-value redevelopment files, particularly in Vashi and Belapur. One senior engineer is said to have backing from multiple ministers and political aides, raising concerns about attempts to consolidate influence within the corporation’s planning machinery.
The Urban Planning Department, which plays a crucial role in clearing redevelopment proposals, has become a focal point for lobbying, given the surge in demand for high-end housing projects in Navi Mumbai’s prime nodes. While some previous commissioners resisted such interference, current developments suggest that lobbying efforts are quietly advancing.
Assistant Director of Urban Planning Somnath Kekane, when questioned about lobbying pressures, declined to confirm whether specific names were being recommended for positions. He maintained that the government’s approval would only help speed up planning processes. Similarly, Municipal Engineer Shirish Ardwad refrained from commenting, stating that personnel decisions fall outside his jurisdiction.
As Navi Mumbai prepares for large-scale redevelopment, concerns are mounting that political maneuvering could influence key administrative appointments, potentially shaping the city’s urban growth trajectory.

Potholes and damaged roads to be fixed on key routes used for Ganesh idol processions and immersions.
The Repairs
With Ganeshotsav just around the corner, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up efforts to make city roads safer and smoother for residents and devotees.
NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed officials to inspect damaged roads and take up urgent repairs, with priority being given to routes that will witness the movement of large Ganesh idols and immersion processions. Engineering teams are inspecting roads for potholes, uneven surfaces, damaged manholes and problems with storm-water drains. To improve monitoring, officials are also geo-tagging potholes so that their locations can be tracked and repairs can be completed without missing important stretches. The civic body is also working on improving street lighting, cleanliness and facilities at immersion points to make the festival more convenient for citizens.
For many residents, smooth roads are more than just a civic issue during Ganeshotsav they are essential for ensuring that processions can move safely and families can participate in the celebrations without worrying about potholes and damaged stretches. NMMC has also appealed to citizens to cooperate with the civic authorities and celebrate the festival responsibly, while keeping the city clean and environmentally friendly.
