Panvel Police Register FIR Against Unidentified MNS Workers for Defacing Airport Sign
Panvel Police have filed an FIR against four to five unidentified individuals for allegedly defacing a direction sign for the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The case was registered at Khandeshwar Police Station under Senior Police Inspector Smita Dhakane, following a complaint lodged by officials from the Panvel Municipal Corporation.
According to the complaint, the accused smeared black paint on the airport’s directional signage, causing damage to public property. The incident took place shortly after the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) issued a warning to the civic body, demanding that the airport be named after late Loknete D.B. Patil, a prominent leader known for his contribution to Navi Mumbai’s development.
MNS leaders had earlier set a deadline for the authorities to meet their demand, warning of “direct action” if it was ignored. When no decision was taken, the defacement of the signboard was seen as an act of protest.
The police have booked the unidentified persons under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Investigations are underway to identify and trace the culprits.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport project, currently under construction, has been the subject of naming disputes in recent months. While some groups support naming it after D.B. Patil, others back alternative proposals. The latest act of vandalism has once again brought the controversy into the spotlight.
