Serial Robber Impersonating Cop Arrested; Rs 1.25 Crore Gold Recovered

The Robber

In a major breakthrough, the Navi Mumbai Police Crime Branch Unit-2 has arrested a habitual offender from Pune who carried out a string of robberies while posing as a police officer. The accused, Sajjad Garibshah Irani (47), was apprehended after an extensive manhunt, solving 16 cases of fake police robberies across Navi Mumbai and neighbouring districts.

Police recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 1.25 crore from Irani, who has over 100 criminal cases registered against him. A repeat offender previously booked under the MCOCA Act, he resumed criminal activities soon after his release from prison.

The probe began after a daylight robbery on July 31 in Kharghar, where Irani duped Pawan Kumar Kejriwal (68) by posing as a police officer conducting a drug raid. Showing a fake ID, he convinced Kejriwal to hand over his gold ornaments worth Rs 1.5 lakh, swapped the bag, and fled.

Under the supervision of ACP Ajaykumar Landge, Senior PI Anil Patil, and officers API Eknath Desai and PSI Deshmukh, the team examined over 25 days of CCTV footage from Navi Mumbai to Lonavala–Pimpri-Chinchwad, eventually tracing the motorcycle used in the crime.

In a twist, police first arrested Irani’s wife, Fiza Sajjad Irani, while she was attempting to sell stolen gold. Her interrogation led to Irani’s arrest from Kondhwa, Pune, on October 28. He confessed to 16 robberies, including one in Jalgaon.

According to DCP (Crime) Sachin Gunjal, Irani remains in police custody till November 6, as investigations continue to identify his accomplices.

The Central Crime Branch of Navi Mumbai Police has busted an inter-district gang targeting elderly women inside housing societies to snatch gold chains and mangalsutras, arresting three suspects identified as Riyaz Ramzan Shaikh, Jamalbadshah Manirul Gazi, and Ashik Billa Gazi.

The police recovered stolen goods worth Rs 12 lakh from the trio, including 95 grams of gold ornaments and two motorcycles used in the commission of the crimes. The investigation was triggered by a chain-snatching incident in Khandeshwar on May 15, where CCTV footage clearly captured one of the suspects.

By matching the visuals with criminal databases, technical intelligence, and local informant tips, police traced the gang to Mira Road and Bihar. Investigations revealed that the gang specifically entered residential complexes to target senior citizens before escaping on stolen two-wheelers using familiar local shortcuts, which one suspect knew well from his prior employment in Kamothe.

To evade law enforcement, the culprits would quickly sell the stolen gold in the region and flee to their native villages in West Bengal and Bihar. With their arrest, the police have solved at least nine cases of theft and robbery across Navi Mumbai, Mira Road, and neighboring areas. The accused, who carry prior charges involving vehicle theft and drug trafficking, have been remanded to judicial custody as authorities work to curtail similar residential property crimes.
