A Navi Mumbai woman’s PAN card was misused to create a fake firm involved in a Rs 29 lakh scam.

The Fake Firm

Navi Mumbai police have launched an investigation after a woman from Sanpada discovered her PAN card was fraudulently used to register a fake firm, “Bhatia Enterprises,” without her knowledge. The company, which also secured a GST number, was reportedly involved in financial transactions amounting to nearly Rs 29 lakh since April 2024.

The fraud came to light when the victim attempted to file her income tax return and was shocked to find unauthorized business activities linked to her PAN. She immediately approached the Sanpada Police Station, where a case was registered against unidentified persons for identity theft, forgery, and cheating.

Initial investigations revealed that the fake firm’s operations were based out of Uttar Pradesh. Police suspect a larger network could be involved in misusing personal identification details to create shell companies and carry out fraudulent transactions.

Police Sub-Inspector Suraj Raut, who is leading the investigation, stated that efforts are underway to trace the culprits and uncover the full extent of the scam. The case highlights growing concerns over digital identity misuse and the need for stronger safeguards in company registration and GST issuance processes.

The incident has raised alarms among citizens about the vulnerability of their personal data and the ease with which it can be exploited for financial fraud. Authorities have advised the public to remain vigilant and regularly monitor their tax and financial records to prevent such misuse.
