In a significant move to ensure a peaceful environment for the upcoming Panvel Municipal Corporation elections, the Kharghar police have arrested a 21-year-old history-sheeter found in possession of an illegal firearm.

The accused, identified as Samu Iqbal Sheikh, was apprehended during a high-intensity combing operation on Monday night. A crime detection team, acting on intelligence and patrolling the Papdicha Pada area in Sector 40, Kharghar, noticed Sheikh behaving suspiciously. Upon intercepting and searching him, officers recovered a country-made pistol and two live cartridges.

Senior Police Inspector Ajay Kamble stated that the arrest is part of a broader crackdown on anti-social elements to prevent any intimidation or violence during the election period. “Our teams are on high alert, specifically targeting history-sheeters, drug peddlers, and individuals carrying unauthorized weapons. This action is crucial to maintaining a fear-free atmosphere for voters,” Kamble said.

Sheikh has been booked under the relevant sections of the Arms Act. While the police have successfully removed the weapon from the streets, the investigation remains ongoing to trace the illegal firearm’s origin and determine whether it was intended for use in election-related disruption.
