A 62-year-old resident of Navi Mumbai has reportedly been duped of Rs 73.72 lakh in a gold trading cyber fraud orchestrated by a woman he met on a dating app, police confirmed on Monday.

According to officials from Khandeshwar police station, the victim, who lives in New Panvel, came into contact with a woman identifying herself as Zia between March and May 2024. Their conversations soon shifted to WhatsApp, where she gradually persuaded him to invest in a gold trading platform, promising high returns.

Trusting her, the man invested a total of Rs 73.72 lakh over a three-month period via a trading app suggested by the woman. However, when no returns were credited to his account, he grew suspicious. Attempts to reach the woman went unanswered as she eventually became untraceable.

Realizing he had been cheated, the victim approached the police. After a preliminary investigation, a case was registered on July 4 under Sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

Authorities are now working to trace the woman and identify any digital evidence connected to the fraudulent transactions. Police have urged citizens to remain cautious of online investment schemes, especially those introduced through unfamiliar personal connections.

Steady monsoon downpours boost primary water reservoir for Navi Mumbai residents.

The Storage

In a major relief for Navi Mumbai residents, water levels at the Morbe Dam the primary drinking water source for the region have reached 75.66% of its total capacity, following consistent monsoon showers across its catchment area in Khalapur.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) officials confirmed that the rising water levels significantly reduce concerns over potential water cuts or supply disruptions in the coming months. The steady inflow has ensured a secure drinking water buffer for over 15 lakh residents across the city.

While the current stock is sufficient to meet daily demand well into early next year, civic engineers noted that sustained heavy downpours are still required for the reservoir to hit 100% capacity and overflow. NMMC continues to monitor catchment rainfall closely to optimize seasonal storage reserves.
