The Delay

Drivers navigating the busy JNPA-Palaspe Highway are reaching their breaking point as delayed roadworks and relentless monsoon rains spark widespread traffic jams near Uran.

The main culprit is the stalled strengthening and concreting of the key service road stretching between Pagote Flyover and Chirle. The project, managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), was originally slated to wrap up within 16 days. However, persistent downpours have brought construction to a halt, leaving the service lane completely closed and forcing local traffic to spill onto the main highway.

“The work was expected to be finished in 16 days, but heavy rain has delayed progress,” said Ravindra Ingole, Divisional Officer at NHAI.

Making matters worse, severe waterlogging between Ghavhan Phata and Jasai Flyover has left commuters wading through knee-deep water due to poor drainage. Adding to the frustration, heavy commercial trucks are frequently parked illegally along the narrow lanes, bottlenecking traffic even further.

Exasperated motorists are calling on authorities to clear the unauthorized parking and expedite the repairs as soon as the weather permits. For now, those reliant on the corridor have little choice but to budget extra time and prepare for long delays.

Navi Mumbai ACB catches State Tax Deputy Commissioner for alleged extortion over tax inquiry closure.

The Crackdown

In a major blow to bureaucratic corruption, the Navi Mumbai Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has detained Deepak Ramchandra Khirsagar, Deputy Commissioner of State Tax, for allegedly demanding a massive bribe to bury an ongoing tax investigation.

The crackdown stems from a complaint filed by a local scrap trader running M/s Vidhi Industries. The business owner had been slapped with a GST show-cause notice regarding tax credits and scrutiny. When the trader met Khirsagar to resolve the notice, the official allegedly demanded Rs15 lakh to close the inquiry. Following intense negotiation, the demanded amount was scaled down to Rs8 lakh.

Refusing to yield to extortion, the trader approached the ACB. Officials discreetly verified the bribe demand at Khirsagar’s office. Following due process, an FIR was registered at the CBD Belapur Police Station under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Shortly after, an ACB team picked up Khirsagar directly from his current office at GST Bhavan in Mazgaon, Mumbai.

At the time of the initial bribe demand, Khirsagar was serving as an Assistant Commissioner in the Raigad Division before his recent promotion to Deputy Commissioner.

The ACB has urged citizens to blow the whistle on public servants demanding bribes by reaching out to their toll-free helpline, 1064.

Over 90 students and faculty hit the road in a 20 km bike rally to promote road discipline and reduce traffic accidents.

The Drive

In a bid to make local roads safer for daily commuters, the Turbhe Traffic Police joined forces with local students and faculty members to host a high-impact traffic safety awareness drive and helmet rally.

The event saw enthusiastic participation, with around 90 students, 20 institute staff members, and traffic officers coming together on 60 bikes. Covering a 20-kilometer route, the rally hit the streets to deliver a clear message to motorists: wearing a helmet and respecting basic traffic rules can mean the difference between life and death.

The rally was officially flagged off by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Navi Mumbai) Arun Patil alongside academic leaders. Addressing the gathering, organizers emphasized that safe driving habits must start early. While wearing a helmet might feel uncomfortable or inconvenient to some at first, building the habit is essential for protecting human lives and curbing preventable road fatalities.

By engaging young motorists directly, the initiative aimed to turn students into active ambassadors for road safety. Traffic officials expressed hope that the message resonates beyond the classroom, encouraging families and everyday commuters across Navi Mumbai to prioritize safety every time they step onto the road.
