Municipal Corporation notifies the society, when a new hoarding pushed back a tree

A Seawoods-based society has received a show-cause notice from the gardens division of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation for endangering a healthy Ashoka tree by erecting a massive billboard right next to it. The front panel of the hoarding and the back metal supporting rods are physically trapped between the top of the Ashoka tree. ‘I had recently complained to the deputy municipal commissioner (gardens), Dilip Nerkar, about the shocking erection of a huge hoarding in the compound of Haware Centurion Mall, Seawoods, which is actually pushing back the Ashoka tree’, said Santosh Sutar, the president of the Navi Mumbai District Congress Committee (OBC division).

Since no billboard may be placed thus near to an existing tree, this is against the law. In this instance, the tree trunk is being pulled back to allow for full visibility of the hoarding by drivers on the main road. In response to Sutar’s complaint, DMC Nerkar said that he is looking into the subject of the trees and that he has given a notice to the relevant society giving them seven days to respond to NMMC.

Anarjit Chauhan, an RTI activist, said: “The local NMMC gardening department authorities must also be questioned as to how they let the tree to be compromised for this new hoarding. The green cover has also been impacted by the abundance of advertising hoardings that have already sprouted up in numerous city locations. Further measures will be made, according to city officials, to protect the Ashoka tree in Seawoods.
