Morbe Dam Reaches 50% Capacity, Ensures Water Security for Navi Mumbai Until November
50% Capacity reached by Morbe dam In June, Highest In 3 Years.
The Capacity
In a major relief to the city’s residents, the Morbe Dam has reached 50% of its total storage capacity—marking the highest water level recorded in June over the past three years. The current water stock is sufficient to meet Navi Mumbai’s demand for the next 134 days, securing supply until November 6.
According to officials from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), this year’s early and consistent monsoon has significantly improved the dam’s storage. As of June 23, 2024, the city had recorded 1040 mm of rainfall, a stark contrast to just 18.20 mm recorded by the same date in 2023. The dam’s water level now stands at 75.99 meters, compared to 68.45 meters two years ago, when only 23.72% of the capacity was available.
Morbe Dam supplies water to key areas of Navi Mumbai, including CBD Belapur, Airoli, Kharghar, and Kamothe under the Panvel Municipal Corporation. Notably, the city has experienced zero water cuts this June—an uncommon achievement, as the month is usually prone to supply issues due to delayed rains.
“In 2024, the dam had reached full capacity only by August 28. If the monsoon continues steadily through July, we expect Morbe to fill much earlier this year,” an NMMC official said. With current reserves estimated to last between 122 to 134 days, the civic body remains optimistic about uninterrupted supply in the months ahead.

NMMC Steps Up Road Repairs Ahead of Ganeshotsav
Potholes and damaged roads to be fixed on key routes used for Ganesh idol processions and immersions.
The Repairs
With Ganeshotsav just around the corner, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up efforts to make city roads safer and smoother for residents and devotees.
NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed officials to inspect damaged roads and take up urgent repairs, with priority being given to routes that will witness the movement of large Ganesh idols and immersion processions. Engineering teams are inspecting roads for potholes, uneven surfaces, damaged manholes and problems with storm-water drains. Since the monsoon is still active, temporary repairs are being carried out using materials such as cold mix and mastic geopolymer. Permanent road surfacing will be taken up once there is a sufficient break in the rainfall.
To improve monitoring, officials are also geo-tagging potholes so that their locations can be tracked and repairs can be completed without missing important stretches. The civic body is also working on improving street lighting, cleanliness and facilities at immersion points to make the festival more convenient for citizens.
For many residents, smooth roads are more than just a civic issue during Ganeshotsav they are essential for ensuring that processions can move safely and families can participate in the celebrations without worrying about potholes and damaged stretches. NMMC has also appealed to citizens to cooperate with the civic authorities and celebrate the festival responsibly, while keeping the city clean and environmentally friendly.

The Hawkers
With Ganeshotsav approaching, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up preparations to make roads and public spaces cleaner and safer. Such stalls will not be permitted to operate beyond 11 p.m. The Commissioner has further directed officials to repair potholes, trim trees along Ganesh procession routes, improve street lighting, remove unauthorised banners and prepare artificial immersion ponds.
