In Vashi, Bird Nests Were Damaged When Trees Were Trimmed
When trimming trees at Sector 28, Vashi, workers from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) destroyed bird nests, which infuriated environmentalists.
Social activist Madhu Shankar expressed her emotions, saying, “It is so disturbing to see the nests being damaged, disturbing the hapless birds.”
Director of the NatConnect Foundation B N Kumar stated, “After long years of painstaking efforts by CIDCO to plant native trees, the city started attracting a variety of birds, and now we are losing our biodiversity within no time.”
Without any professionals present, NMMC merely sends drivers to chop trees, which results in the careless trimming of branches.
According to Madhu Shankar, although the Prime Minister encourages people to plant trees in remembrance of their mothers, workers are harming the trees while claiming to be pruning them and without even using common sense.
Unfortunately, not many people were around because Thursday, August 1st, is a working day. The only person who dared to confront the NMMC employees was a housewife.
NatConnect has brought up the matter with the environment-focused NMMC extra commissioner Shirish Aardwad. The representative pledged to advise the worried employees to exercise caution.
Kumar made a plea to the senior NMMC authorities to make sure that in their overzeal to prune trees, bird nests are not damaged. According to him, there’s a chance that this may lead to criminal charges under several sections of the Environmental Protection Act.
