MLA Ganesh Naik stands for Navi Mumbai.

The Stand

During the monsoon session of the State Legislative Assembly, Member of Legislative Assembly Ganesh Naik has been pushing the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) to delay the sale of plots that the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has reserved in the Development Plan. The purpose of these plots is to provide a range of civic amenities to the people of Navi Mumbai. Industry Minister Uday Samant responded to Naik’s worries by promising that the government will make sure the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s autonomy remained unaltered.

Initially tasked with developing Navi Mumbai, CIDCO paid farmers 50 paisa’s per square meter for their land. But there are a number of public facilities that are lacking, including parks, gardens, schools, and hospitals. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation was established in 1995, although its urban development plan has not yet received approval. Though CIDCO has chosen to sell these restricted plots, the Development Plan still includes reservations for municipal facilities. Similar to this, MIDC has also auctioned Municipal Corporation-allotted facility plots.

MLA Ganesh Naik met with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on June 1, 2023, and made a number of demands. These included stopping CIDCO and MIDC from selling facility plots, exempting residential homes up to 500 square feet from property taxes, keeping contract workers, and making plans for the Airoli-Katai elevated bridge. Naik expressed his dissatisfaction at certain officials’ non-compliance over the last year, despite the Chief Minister’s direction to stop the sale of these lands.

In response to MLA Naik’s concerns, Industries Minister Uday Samant said that CIDCO has 110 square kilometers of land in Navi Mumbai, of which 40 square kilometers have been given to NMMC. He guaranteed the preservation of this 40 square Kilometre area’s autonomy as well as the facility plots that the Municipal Corporation had purchased from CIDCO.
