Chief Of NMMC Keeps A Careful Eye On The City’s Rainfall Condition

Published

Rain situation of Navi Mumbai was closely monitored by NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde.

The Condition

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has been keeping a close eye on the careful preparation of the city’s emergency relief system in response to the persistently high tide and severe rainfall that have affected Navi Mumbai.

After the rainstorm that started on July 24, 2024, at night, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has been placed on high alert. After a thorough inspection of the municipal headquarters’ emergency management room, Commissioner Shinde instructed department heads to keep an eye on and control water build-up in their specific regions.

More safety measures have been implemented as a result of the Meteorological Department’s prediction of prolonged periods of excessive rainfall and tides. To protect the safety of the students, all municipal schools were closed on July 25. Teachers and principals were told to halt afternoon classes and securely bring pupils home.

Significant precipitation was seen in Navi Mumbai, according to rainfall statistics, with averages of 67.43 mm from July 24 8:30 am to July 25, 8:30 am, and 60.41 mm from July 25, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, reported. Koparkhairane and Digha were among the areas with the highest reports. In addition, the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas has increased due to high tide conditions at 4.54 meters.

Recent inspections have revealed that silt build-up and mangrove growth have reduced the capacity of eleven holding ponds intended for rainfall management. Due to their inability to handle the recent intense rains, these holding ponds—which are essential to the city’s flood control system—have accumulated water in certain places.

In order to solve this, the Municipal Corporation is presently pending before the High Court, requesting the required licenses for cleaning and upkeep of these ponds. In the meanwhile, drains and sewers have been cleaned out to provide for easier water drainage once the seas recede.

Commissioner Shinde has asked people to use caution and restrict their travel to just those that are absolutely necessary.
